the only time ballack really got to show his great form at chelsea was in the second half of the 07-08 season when grant moved lampard to deeper midfield position and got ballack playing just behind drogba. in that period he was easily the best player in chelsea and probably the most in form player in europe aside from ronaldo. thats perhaps the only thing grant ever got correct in his time at chelsea where he was able to get the best out of ballack whilst not negating lampards influence at the same time.
other than that his only other individual highlights were those "big games" like against liverpool in the UCL in 08-09 and against man u last season, hes one of the best "big game" players there is

Gerrard. He's one of the best midfielders of my generation tbh, certainly one of the best two English central midfielders I've seen.
Ballack was brilliant at Leverkusen and Munich, and occassionally showed it at Chelsea (beating us 2-1 in 07/08 anyone?
) and performed for Germany as well, but I think Gerrard is something else. The amount of times I've seen him save Liverpool is incredible, and even though many give him stick for his England performances- he's saved us a few times as well.
Also finished 2nd in the Premier League in the same season, don't get a medal- but it's still runner up.
