Suarez didn't use a racial slur to wind someone up, I don't see how anyone could view what he said in that way.

He wasn't punished for racism, he was punished for using racial abuse.

To racially abuse you should have racist intent. If you don't then it's a misunderstanding and should never have these consequences.

Right, I'm not a racist, but I think it'll wind my opponent up by constantly referring to him as a nigger throughout a match. Should I be punished?

If you wind someone up because of their colour then that's racist.

Dan wrote:Laurencio, are you saying that the treatment of John Terry and Luis Suarez has been the same then?

Not at all. Personally I believe that a lot of the stick Suarez has gotten has come from an absurd Liverpool vs The World mentality. I strongly believe that if Liverpool had handled it better, and if certain fans of Liverpool weren't insane, there would be signficantly less media pressure on Suarez. It would in fact be considerably more about John Terry in these past few days, and probably even before, if Liverpool and fans had kept their composure.

Although because of Liverpool's position in English football, they were always going to have a certain level of press on the case. It could all have been handled significantly better, and I stand by my statement that whomever is in charge of PR at Liverpool should be sacked.

Suarez and Liverpool missed a golden oppertunity when England's captain, Chelsea captain, head player in many Kick it Out campaigns in the UK and generally acknowledged bastard John Terry was accused of racially abusing Ferdinand with clear evidence against him. The press were ready to pounce on him, and Liverpool could have shifted the focus by keeping quiet and try to calm the storm, instead Chelsea had a short abrupt cry of outrage from a few fans, kept quiet and let Liverpool take the brunt of the attention.

I'm not saying that it's exclusively Liverpool's fault, but Manchester United hasn't said a word, Evra has been quiet after the first incident, Chelea have released one or two mildly worded statements. Liverpool on the other hand has been on this from day one, and how "great of an injustice" it is, how Patrice Evra is a liar, attempting to discredit Evra both in the media and to the comission with facts that are ironically not even true.

You are probably perfectly aware that this "massive support" you seem to be calling in from everywhere and all the attention you are putting on the issue isn't going to do Suarez or Liverpool any favours in terms of media coverage.

Or he knew it would wind Evra up, but also thought he could get away with it because of its use in S.America.

Nope. IIRC he even attempted to pat Patrice's head in a friendly manner after the ref spoke to them. Doubt he'd do such a thing if he was purposely trying to wind him up throughout the game.

In England, calling someone a negro, is considered racist. If anything the fact that Suarez did not know this is the problem. Evra is not on trial here. All he did was tell the referee he was offended by what Suarez said, and that he felt racially abused. Nothing wrong with that.

Judging from the videos, Evra was being the provocative one. Kuyt had to step in at one point.

Negro is the Spanish word for black. Lots of players are employed by football clubs with the knowledge that they are coming here without a good level of understanding of English.

Is saying Negro racist? Not that Suarez even said that, but for me what's more important is the context. Is Suarez saying Negrito without any racist intent any worse than if Balotelli went up to Sturridge and said "What's up ma Nigga?". Both use words which could be used to be racist....but the word itself is not racist.

Negrito is used by South Americans, to each other in reference to a friend. You dont walk up and say it to a French guy in the hope he thinks its friendly Laughing

Sure...but maybe that didn't cross his mind. When you're talking do you always think about what you're saying, when it's such a common place word for you to use?

Suarez didn't walk up to him and say it in hope that he thinks it's friendly. It's obviously a part of Suarez's every day language and it probably just came out as a part of his natural speech.

I think people should just wait till the FA release the transcripts, and the reasons for the ban.

No one knows what went on, apart from the two football clubs, the two players and the panel.

Even your club has commented that he said negro. They are probably just taking something out of the air, it certainly seems that way atm, but "negro" is definitely the one that is thrown around the most.

It doesn't have an English translation.

I think a word that is inoffensive in one language should not be interpreted into an offensive word in another language.
