The problem with Gerrard is that to get the best of him you have to build the team round him, if you don't then he's a liability eg. World Cup, who gave the ball away for USA's goal? Who passed the ball to the opposition nearly half the time he got it? He needs to be in a role where he has no real responsibility, and you can't really give him that without reducing the impact of superior players such as Lampard and Rooney.
When he plays in CAM it kills Lampard because he has to do all the donkey work and Rooney can't play as the second striker, when he plays on the Left he wants to be the big man and win the game himself so he is always cutting inside all over the pitch (Go and watch England Vs. Algeria) and when he plays in CM he doesn't pass very well, and he leaves holes behind him, it also means you have to drop Lampard.
The biggest problem is his ego, Liverpool fans have been saying for years that he can win games on his own, he is the best player, pundits have joined in, and Gerrard has believed it, so he always tries to do it even when he's surrounded by better players. If he was more disciplined, aware of his role in the team, aware that he is not World Class and he's not going to win games on his own, he could be a good player for England instead of a liability.
