A question about 'Glory Hunting' Empty A question about 'Glory Hunting'

Post by Guest Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:59 am

This term gets thrown/bandied around a lot on this forum, other forums + in real life football conversations.

We all know what a Glory Hunter is .. (See Pablo Sarabia + Real Madrid)

But my question comes down to James' constant claims that you should only support your local team. And that if you DON'T support your local team, then you're more than likely, a "Glory Hunter".

But I find inklings of contradiction in this kind of statement. I mean, he says people should support their local team, yet he has a picture of a foreigner in a Hull kit as his signature.

That brings me to the point of making this thread.

What's the point of bollocking a fan for being a "Glory Hunter" .. if footballers themselves are the biggest Glory Hunters of them all?

Massive contradiction to call someone a Glory Hunter, whilst at the same time, support a foreigner who plays for your team. Foreigners are not local.

Footballers play for wages, it's their job. Moving to a different team to get more wages is nothing like gloryhunting. Football fans don't get paid to support a team.

The foreigner in my sig is not in a Hull kit.

Players aren't glory hunters because they are just doing their job. Thats why I try not to be against a player because he moves to a club for more money.

As already said, this is their job, they all want to play for the best teams- to earn the most, play with and against the best, and win trophies.

Footballers do a job, their job is to win matches. If you win enough matches = trophies.

Of course footballers are glory hunters else they might aswell quit!

Career wise, I suppose it did. But that is a personal achievement for him. As a supporter, supporting the best team is not achievement for yourself. It is completely different.

    Supporters support for a hobby.

Players are just doing a job and of course like in any job you want to do the best you can.

More money and probably more trophies at Chelsea- a better club. The only thing he did wrong was state his loyalty and then move.

Of course he is technically hunting for glory, but it's his job to, his and other footballers situations have no parallel with 'glory hunting' in terms of what team a fan supports.

So if you had your way, every footballer would stay at their starting club for their entire careers?

    What do you mean?

If you are a player you want to win matches. If you win enough matches you get glory/ Surely every player is a glory hunter then. I wouldn't want a player at my club who doesn't want some glory.

They are just doing their job though. It's only natural to jump at the chance to play for a huge club.

When you play football your career comes first unless it maybe involves playing for your favorite teams rivals imo.
Plus you can still play for a different club and be a fan of your club. I heard Theo Walcott say he was a Liverpool fan + Torres say he was a Athletico fan for eg.

I support my local team but Im also a big Arsenal fan.

If a player joins another club for glory its not exactly a bad thing is it ? Im pretty sure most people would do the same.

Scotty, look at it this way.

You manage a corner shop but you get approach to manage a bigger store like Tesco. More money but also it is a new challenge + bigger achievement in your career.

    Just the same for footballers.

It's a footballers job to hunt for glory, Torres moved from Atletico Madrid for glory with Liverpool. Hell, it's a football clubs "job" to hunt for glory, that's why you guys got Suarez and Carrol. If not, every football team would be made up of guys down the block.

The point I'm trying to make is that footballers are glory hunters (naturally, because football is about winning trophies)

So, for a fan to call another fan a glory hunter seems a bit silly.

    a) because the fans don't actually win fuck all.
    b) because footballers are glory hunters, so insulting a fan for being one is like insulting a footballer too.

I don't see football as being a job. Fucking hell. If playing football for Liverpool is a job, then my name is Mr Bean.

Fans are something different though, I don't know how to describe it, but it's something you are born with and branded with. Switching that is taboo, for players it is not because it's a career thing. Paul Scholes is a Manchester United legend but still supports Oldham, Torres still supports Atletico, so on and so forth.

Football is a job. That is how they earn a living.

For supporters it is a hobby. That is the big difference. How do people find it fun sat at home watching streams I will never understand. I watched a Hull game on tv this season, it was shit. I can't even remember who we was against thats how not into it I was.

Whats the point of people supporting a club just because of its liklihood of winning trophys? Its not like you yourself are going to benifit of some other guys accomplishments.

I just hate snub people who ask you what team you support + then calls you scum and the infamous quote "we're better than you lot hahaha".

Yeah but 'gloryhunting' in itself has turned into more than just a technical phrase, otherwise every fan in the world is a glory hunter (everyone wants their team to do well and succeed, therefore hunting glory). Gloryhunter in today's terms means specifically supporting a bigger team over you local one. That's why you can't really draw parallels between players and fans in that respect, whether or not you believe it or if it's just to make a point.

    Hmm, depends.

Porn stars don't always get regular wages I imagine. Probably do it on a pay per job basis. Footballers do get regular wages (most of the time). I would say football is more of a 'proper' job than being a porn star, but being a porn star is still a job.

    Post by Kaka11|LFC Sat Feb 05, 2011 3:51 am

The problem with the term glory hunters is its used to frequently, sure alot of people will start supporting Man United, Barca, Real, Chelsea and those because when they were a kid they were the best teams. If they stick with a team thick and thin however even if the team is in the top flight I don't see them as a glory hunter, say Man U went on a dry spell for five or so years, if these fans stuck with them, they aren't glory hunters. You know a glory hunter when you see one, they aren't dedicated enough to go out of their way to watch games (I have to get up at obsurd times to watch Liverpool anywhere between midnight to 3 in the morning usually unless midweek where its only 6 in the morning), lack of knowledge about the club, lack of excitement/passion when they score, or are just plain clueless about football.

I honestly don't see myself as a glory hunter, regardless of what the likes of James might think, I do have a local team which was only founded two years ago and I've had season tickets both seasons, I've been to the majority of home games and it looks as if we might be dead as a club soon due to lack of investment, were deadlast and hopless as hell and up until the last couple games I was toughing it out, but now its just unbearable, the football is horrible, its painful to watch. Thats another reason why people follow/support top teams rather than their own, they want to see good/beautiful football, like me their local team might be utter shit.
