Summer Transfers 2014

Is it just me or has there been an unusually high number of half decent players on a free this summer? Or at least they are players with big past reputations.


Vidic, Lampard, Eto'o, Lescott, Sagna, Cole, Barry, Ferdinand, Shola Ameobi are some off the top of my head.

Maybe I just took more notice this year, but it seems like that there's more than normal. Maybe it's going to be a new trend to let contracts expire in this way, for some reason.

It does seem like a lot more than usual.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened more often with FFP conscious clubs. Let the old high earners leave and let other teams scrabble for their signature, they don't have to pay a fee and then get one or two decent years out of them.

Looks like Luiz is gone. I still don't get it.

Well even if he turns into a world class defender, they still paid £40m. It's almost impossible for him to exceed the expectations of that price tag.

David Villa has signed for New York FC.



Ciro Immobile has signed for Borussia Dortmund. 

Villa in the bag, and NYCFC are apparently after Fat Lampard as well. Villa signing is a good one for them, think he'll bang in goals next season. Not sure what to expect from Lamps though. He'll be 37 next June, so I'm not sure how much they can get out of him. Would much rather see them (not really) get Mix Diskerud instead. But he doesn't have the attendance pull that Lampard would.

I didn't think Immobile would be able to move.

Don't think there will be one either. Read somewhere that he risks losing a bonus if he hands in a transfer request.
