I'd be happy with us missing out on Sanchez if it meant him moving to Liverpool so that Suarez could depart. Sanchez has proven this season he can be brilliant without the shadow of Messi so he'd thrive at Liverpool but I can't see him being a 30+ goal man like Suarez so it would mean Liverpool would be weakened. I have a suspicion that Sturridge is starting to wane.
Who and how many players would you get with the £50million that could fill the void of Suarez?
That's the thing, I don't know what we would plan to do with it. I imagine we'd get something along the lines of Lovren, Rojo, and maybe Shaqiri, but I'm not sure. I'm resigned to the fact that we'll be weaker next season-much weaker, even-I just hope that we can get 4th and build upon the promise of last season.
Even if our signings only consisted of Lambert, Sanchez/Shaqiri, Lallana, Can, a solid CB and a solid LB, then I wouldn't say we would be "much" weaker. Suarez is a phenomenal player, but under Rodgers, we are definitely not a team reliant on one player. I read somewhere that our record under Rodgers without Suarez is 8 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat. Not to mention that the likes of Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho and Henderson are only going to get even better under Rodgers.
We hold all the cards in this Suarez/Barcelona saga and I honestly think if John Henry doesn't feel that he's getting value, he won't do the deal. We've seen how ruthless he's been. It's being reported that we'll only accept £70-80 million in cash (no installments) or £50 million plus Sanchez. Any low-balling, John Henry will tell them to fuck off and we'll keep hold of the best player in the League, who, like last season, will probably just knuckle down and be brilliant for us again, after his ban is up.
Either way, I think it's win-win for us. I highly doubt Rodgers will allow what happened to Spurs, to happen to us.
Edit: It's probably also worth mentioning that if we sold Suarez, that's 4 years of £200k a week saved. That's £10.4 million extra on top of whatever Barcelona give us.
Edit 2: We also always seem to have a knack of always having at least one "star/world class player" no matter who we sell. Certainly in my time of supporting Liverpool.
Sold Owen, Gerrard became a superstar. Sold Torres, signed Suarez, who then became a superstar. I am hoping the trend continues
