Marcus Stewart is ready to repay Bristol Rovers for the role they played in developing his own football career after returning to the club in a coaching capacity.

The former Rovers striker, 39, was appointed youth and development coach on Friday to mark a return to the club he left 16 years ago to embark on a long and prosperous career, which saw him play at the highest domestic level, as well as in European competition with Ipswich Town.

Stewart's responsibilities are to mainly include helping the club's 18-21 year-old age group make a successful transition from youth football to senior level and he said: "It's great to be back. It's been a long time since I've been at the club, of course, but I'm really looking forward to what is a new challenge for me.

"I hope this opportunity will give me a chance to repay Rovers for what they did for me in my own career. That was part of the attraction when we started discussing the possibility of me coming back here a few weeks ago.

"Rovers were such an important part of my development from when I first got a call from (former youth coach) Roy Dolling when I was a 14-year-old and now I hope to give something back and help a club that is on the up.

"Of course, it is also a great opportunity for me because I'm still learning about coaching and this role can only help in my own development."

Stewart, who has completed the UEFA A Licence and is now working towards the Pro Licence, added: "I've been doing something similar with the young lads at Exeter as part of the coaching set-up over the last two or three years. I'd always shown an interest in going into coaching at the end of my career, so it has been a steady progression over the last seven years or so."

One of Stewart's main responsibilities will be to arrange games for the younger players on the fringes of the squad to try to fill the void in the absence of a reserve team.

"It is important we get these fixtures to give the younger lads experience of playing with and against older more senior players," said Stewart.
    He's back. not worthy

Bristol Rovers boss Mark McGhee explores German prospects

Bristol Rovers manager Mark McGhee has revealed he is using his contacts in Germany to target potential signings.

His friendship with former Hamburg team-mate Felix Magath, manager of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, has led to young winger Fabian Broghammer coming on trial at Rovers this summer.

Striker McGhee played for Bundesliga side Hamburg for the 1984-85 season, scoring seven goals in 30 games.

McGhee told BBC Radio Bristol: "It's good to be able to tap in to it, along with one or two other contacts.

"This lad isn't going to play for Wolfsburg but he looks a player."

Broghammer, 22, played for Germany at Under-19 level and has also had experience in the top-flight with Hoffenheim.

"I want to see him a little bit more," continued McGhee.

"The agreement I have with him is that he'll stay for the pre-season games. Beyond that, we'll sit down with him and make a decision as to whether we think he can be an asset for us."

The Scotsman added: "I also have a friend who I played with in Germany and I'm hoping to have his son over.

"He's been at Nuremburg and got an injury, so fancies a shot in England to get back to his best."
