Did anyone notice the 4th goal "scored" by Madrid at about the same time as the final whistle? Any chance that should have somehow counted? That is a question that does not come up too often but does the ball have to be in back of the net before the final whistle or if it is in the air before the whistle blows and goes in directly should it count?

If the ball isn't past the goal-line before the whistle blows.. it's a no goal. Simple.
The question shouldn't come up often.. because it's a silly question.

It's not like basketball. Once that whistle goes, the game is over at that instance.

OK that makes sense but basketball's rule is really upseting me with no freaking buzzer beaters in this tournament but we can save that for another day. Interesting to note that football and ice hockey have the same end game rules and American football and basketball have the exact opposite rule.

Well i think that goal was only because the game was over, APOEL keeper Dionsis Chiotis was already on the way out of his goal when Özil took the shot. Think it's okay the rules in place, games shouldn't be stopped when teams are on the attack anyway and i don't think a ref would blow the whistle if a hail-mary shot was sent off from the midfield to try for the game unless it was obviously going out.
