Saying "anyone who is Catholic deserves everything they get as far as insults are concerned" is downright prejudice. It's being completely intolerant to other peoples beliefs.
So if I were to say fuck Tom Cruise would that be a sectarian remark?

Well that is just plain wrong. Nowhere does it say that anyone who isn't christian will burn in hell forever. The belief in christ will lead to salvation, but only god can determine what leads to damnation. Doesn't necessarily mean that everyone else is damned. One of the more important notions of christianity says that judgement is down to God, and only God. Jesus died on the crosss for all of mankind's sins, not just for a select few.

At least get the beliefs right.

    Edit. Bah quote fucked up....

I am talking about Catholicism. There is a handy concept in Catholicism called Papal Infallibility, which means that it is impossible for any Pope to be incorrect when speaking infallibly.

The Church has infallibly defined as follows:

" There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which NO ONE at all is saved. (Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, 1215.)

" We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff. (Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull, Unam Sanctum, 1302.)

" The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes, and preaches that NONE of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics [Protestants] and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, UNLESS before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, NO ONE, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church. (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441).

Seems pretty clear to me. Pope Benedict buys into this, so fuck him.

Fair enough. I personally find the very concept of infallibility, which was established in the 1800s retarded and without basis in any religious texts, but I guess I can't argue against it. Regardless of utterly dimwitted it may be.

Viva, Fuck the pope is an illegal term, it's sectarian.

Also saying all catholics deserve everything they get is about as sectarian as you get.

Just because he doesn't agree with religion doesn't mean he's allowed to be prejudicial against peoples beliefs.

So no-one is allowed to hate the pope? He's not being prejudiced either - prejudice is when you judge someone or something without knowledge. RR's made an informed stance on Catholicism.

You can't choose to be black or white or whatever, and there's not a specific doctrine all black people follow whereas Islam and Catholicism have beliefs RR doesn't agree with. Plus, it's not a specific attack on individuals who practice it, it's mainly the ideology. I don't agree with the "Catholics deserve everything they get" thing because that does sound more personal. Fuck the pope is only breach of the peace if the person's intending to cause trouble - not when they are voicing concerns about society.

I still don't agree that it's strictly sectarian in this instance.

EDIT: I just remembered Tim Minchin wrote a song called the "Pope Song" which includes the line "fuck the motherfucker" repeated throughout it. Give it a listen and you'll maybe appreciate RR's point of view more.
