Quite a lot were.....but they weren't good enough to move up a level so just thought that they'd settle for a poor league and Europe.

The Maestro wrote:Why do you think players choose to come here instead of bottom half Premiership sides? Playing for one of the most supported clubs in the world, chance of playing in the Champions League, playing in front of 60k at home in front of best fans in the country.
Here's one of our latest signings, Victor Wanyama on why he snubbed the Premier League for Celtic.
"Aston Villa made an offer but I chose to come here.
"I chose Celtic because I really wanted to win trophies and Celtic are a great club, a historical club.
"European football was another reason. Aston Villa aren't playing in the Europa League and Celtic will be.
"It was an easy choice for me."
And you think playing for Southampton in the Championship would be a bigger lure to this player?

Hilarious, All have either played in the PL or had bids rejected for them from PL clubs (apart from Goian).

A fair few teams obviously think differently, including Newcastle.

There are lots of players in the Championship who could make the step up. There is just too many of them to give them all a chance, plus there is obvious risks that come with buying untried players.

I've once argued that the Old Firm is better than playing in the Championship. But in Hooper's situation I think a move to Southampton would be better, although it's a little risky If they don't go up this year then I believe from next season onwards they will be a mid-table club and he would be stuck there IF that becomes the case then playing at Celtic would probably be better for him. Also if they do go up this year (Which is a real possibility) then I don't think they would be able to hack it in the prem due and would go right back down after getting less then points than Derby where he would be playing for a mid-table Championship club as it would be hard to impress any of the bigger teams when your team would be getting destroyed week-in-week out.
If it was me personally I would take the risk though.

Pardew"I think he's coming back to a completely different level of football, I'll tell you that now.
"We have watched that division and watched him all year.
"We've been disappointed with the quality of the games, other than the occasional Rangers versus Celtic game, and even some of those have been poor."

Not having a go at you but it annoys me when people say this in general, as if they know what goes on in their manager's head.Big_Lad_Pardew wrote:Not one would get in the NUFC team.Jelavic9|RFC wrote:

I think Jelavic and maybe one or two others from the SPL could make it in the premiership, and they could possible be succesful.

Winning the SPL is like beating your Grandma in an arm wrestle, not really much to it...The Maestro wrote:James the way you structure the opening post leaves out all the good things about playing for Celtic and highlights every single positive you could think of for playing in the Championship. And you claimed you weren't being biased.
Winners medals , titles, European football and playing in front of 60k of the best fans in Britain for me please.

I'm trying to work out which ones would get in Newcastle's team.
Jelavic - probably to partner Ba, 2nd choice if Newcastle go 1 up though.
McGregor - over Krul? No chance.
Naismith - Nope
Davis - Over Cabaye and Tiote? No.
Wallace - Over Santon? No.
Papac - no
Bocanegra - Over Collocini and Taylor? No.
Goian - Same as above
Edu - Same as Davis
Alexander - Over Krul? No.
McCulloch (Possibly) - Same as Davis

Is this happening? Is Hooper linked with Southampton or something?

I'd like to hear what you think on the question being asked, ignoring James biased post which basically ensures the votes go his way.
Celtic
- play in front of 60k of the best supporters in the country
- play in champions league next season
- winners medals and trophies
Southampton
- play in front of 20k fans
- chance of premier league promotion
- then immediate relegation
i have no included the standard of football, because quite simply, some of the football in the Championship is DIRE, as is some of the football in Scotland.
To say the football up there is better is pushing it.

Nottingham Forest; a Championship club, have more European Cups than every single club in Scotland put together.
