Personally I'd put several players ahead of him, for example Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi (And many others) But apparently the readers of the Guardian don't share the same views.

Quite an entertaining read also. Basically gives a reason as to why Gerrard finished higher in the poll.

There are several who come well before Messi, Ronaldo and Xavi even (although at the end of their careers, Messi and Ronaldo will probably certainly warrant it. But not based on current accomplishments).

He's a phenominal player. Maybe doesn't deserve to be there but it's an English article.

Xavi is not better than Gerrard though.. Why put him on it? Xavi is a superb passer but Gerrard is only just behind. At everything else Gerrard is ahead of Xavi.

You can't compare the likes of Messi/Ronaldo to Gerrard as they are in different positons(Which is why I compare Xavi to Gerrard). The Messi's and Ronaldo's are only still young and will most likely get in it if they keep on playing like they are up to their 30's.
