Did I say he did not deserve to win it? I don't think those words ever came out of my mouth or from my keyboard.

If it's about team performance or the World Cup, why didn't Treble winning World Cup Finalist and Top Scorer (I think) Wesley Sneijder win it? Why didn't world cup winners Xavi or Iniesta, one of whom was the best player at the World Cup, the other scoring the winner in the Final win it?
Well probably because Messi was lights out the best player in the world the year that Inter won the treble. Secondly, when I say its more team based and tournament based I am referring to times when Ronaldo and Zidane won mainly because they were World Cup years. The year that Ronaldo won because he was leading scorer at the World Cup should not have over shadowed the fact that Henry had a better season than he did, yet wasn't even included in the finalists. Another example is Cannavaro who has already been mentioned. The reason neither Xavi or Iniesta won it was beacuse once again Messi was better than them AND he is on the same team so their success also attributes to him winning it.
I have always thought soccer awards are broken and wished they were handled more like our awards in the NBA, MLB, and NFL where it truly does go to the best player in the league regardless if they are not on a title winning team etc. Messi is deserving of the award, but I am specifically talking about winners in the past and players who make the short list that shouldn't have.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't US sports a lot more socialist than European sports? The best players don't necessarily play for the best teams in the way they almost invariable do in Europe? In that case it's no surprise that your individual awards often go to good players for shit teams, but in Europe there is a perception that the best player will normally play for the best team, and it's normally borne out.
The tendency to award it to the best player from the best team, particularly at international competitions, seems to have gone, Ronaldo won it in 2008 despite having a shit Euro Championship, 2004 the Ballon d'Or went to Shevchenko and the FIFAWPotY went to Ronaldinho, despite neither enjoying any great success in any international competition, for club or country. Messi won it in 2010 despite not winning anything outside of Spain, and he won it because he was seen as the best player, not the most successful one.
