It depends what context it is in, if we are aiming near the top which we should be then it is a shit defence but if we are just aiming for a top 4 finish then the defence is ok..ish

Meh, we were fine in open play imo. Well, we could have improved obviously and Vermaelen was a massive loss, but I wouldn't call our defence shit. Our defending at set pieces was utter shit.
Anyway, i'm off to watch a movie. Byeeeeeeee.

This all stemmed from Wenger being a retard in the 07/08 season selling dolphin head Diarra instead of playing him to force Flamini to sign a contract.

Answer a question for me. Is defending set pieces part of defending? If the answer is yes, which it is then that means our defense collectively was shit and thus a fact. Doesn't matter if we defended well on the floor, we lost games and points due to are shit defending of set pieces and lost a cup final because of Laurents boneheaded mistake which had nothing to do with adapting to the league, positioning or anything else.
It is the worst defense among the teams we are trying to compete with for the title and the result back that up. Again fact.

True, but in Wengers defense Lasana didn't wait around long enough to get a chance. Had he just stayed he would more than likely be starting or at least in rotation to start.

Arise you are wrong.
Koscielny is a good player, especially at tackling and our defence is not weaker than last season at all.

I agree he is a very impatient person but he had the quality to start he wasn't even in the squad on some matchdays, once Wenger picks a formation for the season he doesn't change it would of been interesting to see Flamini Diarra Fabregas in a 3 man midfieldAriseForLife wrote:Filippo Inzaghi wrote:This all stemmed from Wenger being a retard in the 07/08 season selling dolphin head Diarra instead of playing him to force Flamini to sign a contract.

Ergh, again you're stating your opinion as fact.
No, defending set pieces, is done as a team not just the defense. In fact, most of the time the full backs aren't even in the box, or are on the line so really it's only half the defense.
Koscielnys mistake in the final was a bad one yes, but that doesn't give you the right to say he's shit, and our whole defence is shit because of it.
And the last part is fact yes, but it's a stupid meaningless fact, because there's a reason behind it, which are set pieces, and as i've said above that's due to the whole team and in fact more the management, not just the defense.
Anyway, Next isn't a great film On to the next one.

Laurent might be good, but not good enough for a club of our standing. He is shit compared to the quality that we could have at the club.
Well please use your genius to enlighten me. We haven't added a first teamer, we sold our starting left back and have promoted Gibbs to starting when he isn't anywhere near even the declining Clichy. So please tell me how we aren't weaker this season than we were last season? Adding Thomas back isn't going to make us suddenly stop conceding goals which we did when he was healthy in his inaugural season. He is good, but he isn't that good. No man can promote a change of that magnitude.

Valid point, but people didn't see his true quality until he left us for Portsmouth and shined. He was so so for Chelsea, but nowhere near the level he was at Portsmouth and then Real Madrid. I wouldn't mind seeing him back now because he could help the team and challenge for a starting spot over Song.

You said we are weaker in defence than last season yet we have Vermaelen fit which is an improvement and Gibbs doesnt keep opposition players onside unlike Clichy. also our new zonal marking system has been successful thus far.
If you think we are weaker then you really are a deluded arsenal fan.

It was Tech9's fault, not Koscielny, in the CC final, he just went to clear it because he didn't hear a call.

For the love of God. I am not talking about dividing the shitness between team defending or just our back line, the bottom line is it was shit, FACT. If you disagree then you're kidding yourself and are just arguing for the sake of arguing. Conceding as many goals as we did on set pieces is a fucking tragedy and a lot of the time those mistakes/mishaps involved our central defenders in the box. Our fullbacks don't reall factor into the equation of being shit because most of our mistakes defensively were because of our central defenders over the last 2 seasons.
Koscielnys mistake in the final was a bad one yes, but that doesn't give you the right to say he's shit, and our whole defence is shit because of it.
Laurent is shit for more than just that massive mistake. I never said our entire defenise was shit because of that mistake. Our defense is shit because of the 20+ set piece goals we gave up, the dropping of points at various periods during the season, the surrending over a 4 goals lead against Newcastle, the soft goals we consistently allowed in the 53-88th minute last season or the very early soft goals we allowed at points last season.
And the last part is fact yes, but it's a stupid meaningless fact, because there's a reason behind it, which are set pieces, and as i've said above that's due to the whole team and in fact more the management, not just the defense.
It isn't a meaningless fact because it all comes back to our defensive quality. You keep isolating defense as being just the back four and I am referring to our defense as a whole (hence why I said collectively) and that means team, coaches, central defenders etc. The defending of set pieces more of our "defensive players" than anyone else thus it falls on them more. Who is in the box when the kick goes up? Central defenders, Song, and anyone with height, but mainly our CBs and Song with the fullbacks on the line which again makes up the bulk of our defense.

If you think we are weaker then you really are a deluded arsenal fan.
You're a moron if you think we are better defensively now than we were last season. As I said before, adding Thomas back doesn't make us automatically better. His inclusion is not going to suddenly erase 20 allowed goals a season. We gave up 43 goals last season without Vermaelen and 41 goals in his first season when we had Gallas who is better than anyone we currently have.
Using Clichy is a weak excuse because he's been doing it for years and yet our defense has been better than it currently is now. Our zonal marking is irrelevant right now because we haven't played anyone. Using the preseason games as a marker is foolish because the teams we played in preseason where shit for the most part excluding Benfica who are a good team.
The Bat-Man wrote:It was Tech9's fault, not Koscielny, in the CC final, he just went to clear it because he didn't hear a call.
No idea who Tech9 is, but that goal was Laurent's fault so please don't try and redirect it or make excuses for him.

Clichy > Vermaelen at left back. Gibbs and Traore(not even a LB) are both extremely injury prone so tbh expect Vermaelen to play a shit load of games at left back with one of the jokers filling in at CB.Chris wrote:You said we are weaker in defence than last season yet we have Vermaelen fit which is an improvement and Gibbs doesnt keep opposition players onside unlike Clichy. also our new zonal marking system has been successful thus far.

DEFENDING SET PIECES IS NOT ONLY THE DEFENDERS DUTIES. IT'S THE WHOLE TEAM. OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM WAS BECAUSE WE HAD POOR TACTICS WHICH ARE ALSO THE COACHES FAULT.
Leaving it at that.

Comparing Koscielny to Silvestre? Silvestre was waaay past it. Koscielny is far, far from past it and has shown if you put him next to Djourou or Vermaelen he can play well.
Also, at least read the posts before. Nobody has said he should be our starting CB, i've said that at least 3 times already.
