They usually last the entire length of a contract, rather than a specific date. Also until somebody can provide a reliable source confirming this contract clause its all just speculation to me. There's lots of conflicting claims being made on here about it.

Maybe Chamberlain was abit high at £7M + £5M in add-ons but thats nothing huge and im sure we'll make profit on him if we sell one day anyway.

They don't, it's common for it to be a set price until a certain date. Thiago's release clause was set to increase automatically on the 1st of July.(although he signed a new contract on the end of June anyway)
