They don't, it's common for it to be a set price until a certain date. Thiago's release clause was set to increase automatically on the 1st of July.(although he signed a new contract on the end of June anyway)

You misunderstood me. I'm saying that it is common for release clauses to change over time. Thiago had a clause of x amount(can't remember exactly) before July 1st that would automatically increase to x amount after July 1st.

It's perfectly reasonable to assume the same for Mata, I'm not saying it is but you're wrong in saying that release clauses stay the same over the contract.

We won't sign anyone decent by the end of the window anyway.

Well I could be wrong but many clubs just keep 1 static number the entire length of a contract when they are required to put buy out clauses in. Off coarse higher profile players will have more complex contracts but I'm talking as a whole. It's bad of me to assume this as, like I said this sorta stuff is usually not disclosed to the public but if you can provide evidence to prove me wrong I shall gracefully accept defeat.

I don't know whether the Mata buyout clause being £20m until 1st August is true or not, I wouldn't see it as impossible though.
