Surprised no-one's mentioned Ferdinand yet, he's a better player than Vidic in my view.

Well I think Dawson will soon pass him and be Englands best defender. I always felt Terry relied more on Carvahlo for his success.

What about Puyol? This season has been quite injury-ridden one, but on his day, definitely the best?

I agree with RR. Vidic's tackling is quite erratic at times whereas Ferdinand is a defensive stalwart and the pinnacle of composure.

The injuries have hit him, but it's the same as van Persie, he'll miss a lot of games but when he is fit he is exceptional.

Vidic has such an uncanny knack to get a vital block or tackle in, I guess thats a very simplistic Match of the Day way of judging a CB though

That's interesting, most MU fans or afficionados always seem to have Vidic higher. Rio I guess is a but more technical, but he's been injured more often then not lately so it is kind of hard to take him into account.

Do people here really think Terry is England's best centre back? Honestly, I can't understand that, you might as well be watching a different sport to me.

Yeah, taking the injuries into account, Vidic is obviously more important to the club, fit Ferdinand Vs. fit Vidic though, it's Ferdinand every time for me.

Ferdinand back in like...2007/2008(I'm guessing here) was one of the best displays over a season I've seen. Vidic won't ever match it.

Defenders are usually the hardest to predict seeing ad young ones don't always play. I really like Dawson, he's good defensively and I've always preferred defenders who play a but more like sweepers, looking to come out of the back playing.

Yes, they do, but thud and blunder defenders are always more highly rated than their sophisticated, tactical and technical counterparts, look how much praise Terry got in comparison to Carvalho when they were partners. Vidic is a very good defender, and if I was going to buy one defender in the Premier League, or in the world, it would be him, but Ferdinand is a better one when he's available.

2007/08 he was godlike. There was a period of a few months in 2008/09 when Vidic was just as good as that, so good that we literally didn't concede any goals for months whenever he was playing, but it all came to a rather unpleasant end and he couldn't keep it up all season.

    He plays shifty

No but you made a good point, Im probably one of those who get sucked in by the agressive sliding tackle type of defenders, plus a bit of Chelsea bias I've always just prefered Terry

RR that's what I have been saying this whole thread. That's why I rate Thiago Silva so highly. Tbf though I would go as far to call VIdic's style brutish, his positioning is excellent and he's a threat on any set piece.

Agree 100% on this, from what I've watched from him his positioning is always spot on, and he's good at both defending/attacking set-pieces.

To me, Vidic is no better than Kompany if I'm being honest. Kompany gives away less fouls, but that's about it.
