Fair enough, but we don't get a CAM option do we?

No, but there'll be 2 striker spots, if you picked Gerrard in one of them he'd be playing as a second striker like he did in 2007/08. That's a damn sight closer to his best than Central Midfield. It wouldn't be fair to the other players to include him in this, one of the main parts of his game, the reason he gets the most praise, is his goals and assists, and most of these don't come when he's playing as a central midfielder and a 2.
He played in the hole that year, not sure if he falls under the striker category. Either way, midfield is his natural position and he deserves to be in the poll. It's tough though, there's been loads of brilliant midfielders over the last 20 years. Scholes will win.

Midfield in a 4-4-2 isn't his natural position, playing in the hole is undoubtedly in the striker category, not the central midfield category. No-one is nominating Rooney for this position even though in the hold is his best position. Scholes probably will win, and rightly so, but no team would ever play with a midfield 2 of Scholes and Gerrard unless they had only utter shite available as an alternative.

Gerrard should be included in the striker poll, not this, he's far too attacking and ill disciplined for this role, it would be like playing Rooney there, you'd only do it if you were desperate.

    Bowyer is a good shout.

But just like Izzet, he most likely wont get put in this poll because when these where at their best the OP was about 4.

Bryan Robson and Paul Ince should also be in there but probably won't.

What's happening with Claude Makelele? Definitely deserves his place in the XI on his defensive capabilities despite not being a central midfielder, although I fear with him being put in a poll including the best CM's such as Scholes, Keane, Vieira etc. he will get overlooked.

Makelele > Mascherano but Makelele shouldn't be in this team in my opinion, you'd be leaving out players who have done far greater things in the Premier League and done more.

    Tell me why I'm wrong.

I'm not talking in Premier league best team context here but as a player Mascherano is superior imo. He's one of the most underrated players in the world, bossed two champions league finals, maybe the best tackler in the world, fantastic engine. Just a complete monster.

Yeah but it's not, it's based on overall central midfielders therefore what you said makes no difference. Neutral

I was pointing out a formation where Gerrard would be in the second striker role, if you look back that was the discussion.

If it was 2 strikers in a 4-4-2 Ruud would be my pick as well, but I don't think people will agree with that.

The fuck? Bossed 2 Champions League Finals? The first one he did a good job of marking Kaka out of the game, but he hardly bossed it, and the second one was bossed by the likes of Xavi and Iniesta, not a central defender who had almost nothing to do. He's an excellent player but you're crediting him for things he didn't actually do.

Bergkamp, Shearer or Ruud would be the only 3 that are worth mentioning next to Henry imo unless i've missed someone big out although for it to be Bergkamp it would have to be 4-4-1-1

So if this poll is based on both defensive and central midfielders then my votes go to Scholes and Vieira, enough balance there I feel. Hate to leave Makelele out though.
