Post by CollieBuddz Tue May 17, 2011 4:51 am

Anyone done it? I've tried a few time but never succeeded.

I have decided to retry starting today.

The arguments in my head have started.

My mate tried to replace his craving with something. So like when he felt he needed a smoke, he'd do something else. Can't remember what it was though. Worked well for him, he quit fully within a couple of weeks.

It's all or nothing with me I think. I've been telling myself for the last hour, "buy another pack and use it to cut down." but if I buy another pack, then I'll keep telling myself the same thing. Eventually I'll be back to what I usually smoke.

I've been looking for something like that but can't think of anything. I'll go through a pack of chewing gum in half hour.

Stop smoking almost as soon as I started, so it wasn't an issue for me.

    Just stop.

No matter how hard it is.....if you REALLY want to quit then you'll do it. If you're just looking for an easy way out but wouldn't mind smoking if you can't stop then it'll never work.

If he minded smoking he wouldn't have started in the first place really. I don't think that's a great argument, people who wouldn't mind smoking can still find ways to quit.

I stopped with just willpower. I can even smoke the odd fag when I'm out drinking and not worry about getting addicted.

I hate smoking. I'd say I enjoy one cigarette a day, usually after going a while without one and after eating.

    Have you smoked?

There's nothing like trying to quit it. You lose concentration badly. I mean, even just typing that last sentence I started staring at the window (not lying either Laughing). It's like it's not even me in my head. Everything about me wants to quit cigarettes, but I'M telling myself in my head to go buy a pack and just have one.

I don't have an addictive personality. I do a lot of things in excess but I don't get addicted. Not like cigarettes. It really is one of the hardest things to do.

I've never smoked as I think it's shit in every way, but I know enough about willpower. For 1 year I just randomly said "Ok, fuck ANYTHING sugary, unhealthy, etc etc. I didn't once cave in, no matter how many times it was around the house, offered to me etc".....and I went from an overweight sugar junkie to (arguably) underweight as I lost 2 stone Laughing. I used to be the kind of guy who would eat when I was bored....and generally dieting is pretty hard for most people...I just really wanted to do it as I felt bad about myself....so that made it really easy.

Zzonked wrote:If he minded smoking he wouldn't have started in the first place really. I don't think that's a great argument, people who wouldn't mind smoking can still find ways to quit.

It's not like you have the same attitude towards smoking forever. You might enjoy it when you start, but grow to hate it. That said......whilst hating the thought of smoking you might like smoking. There is a difference between liking to smoke, and having a craving for it.....if you like to smoke then it's going to be hard to convince yourself to stop......and craving wise that's just a hurdle you have to jump.

Yeah, quitting sugary stuff is not comparable.

I used to drink like atleast 2 litres of Coke a day. I drink it occasionally now. I've smoked weed everyday for the last 3 months, but have been skint for the last few days and haven't been able to, but I have no problem. I used to snort a lot of coke, basically don't touch it now.

    Nicotine is not comparable.

Rubbish. It's all in the mind. My Grandad had immense willpower, he gave up smoking overnight. Yet, he wants to give up drinking (he has a whiskey every night - so it's not anything bad) but he can't. It's the way the mind works. People think 'willpower' is a collective term, it isn't.

Ry, gave me mate a ring and he said he just ate loads of chocolate whenever he got a craving. Ate so much he started till he started feeling sick and he wouldn't crave one. Apparently, he now associates a cigarette with feeling ill, so whenever someone smokes around him, he feels sick. So you might not want to go down that route.

Actually Dan thats a good idea, negative reinforcement. One thing ive seen is wear an elastic band on your wrist and twang it every time you get a craving and soon enough you'll associate wanting to smoke with a sharp pain and then you wont want to smoke

I don't like chocolate. Well, I do but only in very small amounts. A whole chocolate bar makes me feel sick anyway.

I also don't want to do anything that will put weight on me. My weight goes up and down like a fucking yo-yo. It's too much hassle.

I'm thinking of getting an inhaler thing.

    Cheers for the help though.

That sort of stuff don't work with me. I'll just keep telling myself "don't wear an elastic band while smoking".

A mate of mine used to put the tenner he spent on tabs a week into a jar instead of buying them, once he could see he was piling up the cash it made him determined to stop for good.

Another mate got hypnotherapy but that was probably expensive. Laughing it did work though.
