Paul Scholes quite easily.
I would pick Gerrard over Paul now though since Paul is at the twilight of his career where as Steven has at least 4 years minimum left in his career baring any serious injuries.

I don't understand how this is truly debatable. I think Scholes is a fantastic player. But other than passing, Gerrard is better in every single way.

In my opinion Scholes is much more intelligent as a player, can control a game better, better passer.. and over his career his running into the box heading, nice finishes and long shots haven't been bad either.
In my opinion to say it's not debatable is a fucking joke, Scholes has been an amazing fotoballer and yeah Gerrard is probably more complete because he's more of an athlete, but Scholes is the better footballer imo, and I'd take him every time in his prime.
Btw I think Gerrard is superb, and one of the best midfielders I've seen along with Scholes.

Gerrard cannot tackle. Media goes over the top about scholes tackling.
Gerrard is a bottler. Every side he has captained has failed (except for 05 team) which finished below everton.
