The Oceania Playoff - Should it be scrapped?

Basically, a team such as NZ has the potential to not go to the WC because that have to play a team from eithe Asia or South America, whence many of their teams qualify anyway. It is not fair imo, and it is not a World Cup if only 5 of 6 footballing continents are playing in it.

So, should it be scrapped, so a team such as NZ make the WC without the shitty playoff rule?

Not true. IMO, Solomn Islands will be better in 10 years time, plus other nations will have improved too, such as New Caledonia, they look promising.

It's so annoying too. The 5th best Asian or SA team goes through at the expense of an Oceanic team. A world Cup should include at least one team from each continent (excluding Antartica).

Why exclude Antarctica? That is dumber than scrapping the Oceania playoff.

Forget about scrapping it, South America is filled with quality teams. I much rather Colombia or Chile or Paraguay (perhaps even Venezuela? ) go to the WC than New Zealand.

dumbing down the quality of the world cup isnt helping anything. just because new zealand defended well in south africa doesnt mean they are gods gift. dont forget that they only had 3 shots at goal during the whole tournament and new zealand as a country have less than 30 professional players. every dog has its day but dont get carried away, without the a-league new zealand would be in a shocking position right now as their players use the a-league as a pro route in the game. if not for it then most of their players would be back in the lower leagues of england

the play off place against the last asian team/last conmebol team is not fair? australia had to go through this process for years. smashing island teams 20-0 that cant even buy their own equipment and thus getting automatic qualification to the world cup is what i would call not fair

Agreed, people make out that they were great at SA just because they were undefeated, 3 shots on goal in 3 games is nothing to boast about, just shows how out of their depth they were, they just defended for the lives. Don't we want the best teams in the WC? Oceania don't have any good teams, NZ are the best and they are average at best, so to prove that they are good enough for the WC they have to beat a decent team.

Then why didn't we get a fair chance, maybe we could be more of a dominate footballing country if we were allowed direct entry

You may have been undefeated but you didn't win a game, you only had 3 shots on target in 3 games. Just shows you either failed to break through defense or you just put everyone behind the ball and had the odd counter-attack.

New Zealand was not even close to the worst team in it. They played great, deserve to be back, it is the WORLD cup after all

Its not like they havent got the opportunity to qualify, they have a clear route to the playoff against an Asian/South American team, they have to prove themselves and qualify just like everybody else, If Oceania had an automatic spot then NZ would pretty much get it everytime with barely any competition, that would be unfair. Asia, South and North America, Africa, Europe are all competive, they qualify through many tough games. Not strolling through against the Soloman Islands or Fiji or something.
