It's usually a non-event. Although it occasionally proves to be entertaining and dramatic, on average both teams really don't do anything proactive. They just try not to concede and wait for penalties. The Copa Libertadores doesn't have ET, and I think it works well.

Well the two times we went to ET in the Champions League this season it was pretty eventful.
It's a bit harsh if it goes straight to penalties though, It's nice to have a chance to finally settle it before you know you're going to penalties, instead of being thrown straight in the deep end.
