Japan withdraw from Copa America Empty Japan withdraw from Copa America

    Post by Weather130 Wed Apr 06, 2011 12:03 am

Japan have pulled out of this summer's Copa America tournament, as the country continues to deal with the fallout from the devastating March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

The Asian side had been invited to play as a guest national team in the South America, along with CONCACAF's Mexico, for the competition which begins on July 1 in Argentina. However, they have been forced to withdraw to deal with the the huge problems caused by the natural disaster.

"The priority at this moment is to continue saving lives and rebuilding the country," Japanese Football Association president Junji Ogura said on the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) website. "We are sorry to be pulling out."

A CONMEBOL spokesman suggested Costa Rica or Canada as possible replacements but said nothing had been decided.

CONMEBOL President Nicolas Leoz said in a statement that he "deeply lamented" Japan's decision, while a spokesman said that the organisation ''will make a final decision relying on the consensus of its members" over who should replace them.

Costa Rica and Canada have been rumoured to be interested, while World Cup winners Spain are also believed to be on the shortlist.

It would be nice if the USA could replace them but I know they are busy with the Gold Cup and other stuff going on this Summer.

They've asked Spain to take the spot. Neutral

Typical COMNEBOL, always looking after the bottom line. Now Spain can be reigning World, European, and South American Champions. facepalm

Nah, Brazil have already held 3 International Titles at once on 2 occasions, and France have done it once, although one of those was the Confederations Cup. I think Spain would be the first team ever to be Champions of two continents at the same time though.

You just reminded me that it would be great to have an Africa team to play it, a team like Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon or Egypt would be great.

Obviously not on the ones played in Argentina of course. shifty

If Spain go, I seriously don't think they will win. The last time they faced a South America nation, they had to win in the last minute even though they were OUTCLASSED the whole game. Even before that, Argentina gave them a whooping (3-1?). And during the WC, they played Paraguay and were matched closely by those guaranis.

Spain don't play all that great against South American nations, they might rule Europe..but I firmly believe if they come down here they wouldn't win it.

Japan are still holders of the unoffical football world cup so I guess this is an oppertunity that goes away for any South American team to take away this title.
