If your a team looking for revenue then you want to go as far as possible. But in arsenals case its a blessing in disguise

I guess it depends, are there any financial incentives?

I'd have thought the general rule of thumb is the further you go, the better you've done.

That would be an obvious way too think, but you need your strongest team to compete in the champions league.. so if you are fighting for other things and you don't win it, does it do you any favours?Sean wrote:Well its always better to get further than not?

Less games, less likely to suffer injuries, id take that any day over getting to the semisayvee1 wrote:I'd have thought the general rule of thumb is the further you go, the better you've done.

More money better for the fans etc if you go further. Don't think there's any pluses from going out early apart from not being embarrassed if you're shit.

That's using hindsight though. It's not like when you progress through the quarters you know you're going to go out in the semis. As long as you're still in the competition you have a chance of winning it, and that's what teams want.EdinsonCavani wrote:Less games, less likely to suffer injuries, id take that any day over getting to the semisayvee1 wrote:I'd have thought the general rule of thumb is the further you go, the better you've done.

The further you go the more succesful the world will see you. Plus you never know if you will actually win or not till you actually lose.
Plus the further you go the more experienced the team will get.

Is it better to be graceful in defeat?

What if Shaktar from flying past Roma injure players.. then they dont win it and the injuries lose them the league.

Yes
I'd rather get to the final then go out in the 1st round.

These are "what if's", fact is clubs would rather advance to the latter stages. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but unfortunately no one can see into the future.The-Reporter wrote:What if Shaktar from flying past Roma injure players.. then they dont win it and the injuries lose them the league.

Whats the point of entering it at all if you would prefer to go out early rather than later.

A semi final loss hurts more than a round of 16 loss, when your team gets dumped out you're not contemplating gate receipts.
Better for the club? Yes.
Better for supporter? Fuck no, not in the short term at least!

You've got to aim and go as far as you can in EVERY competition you play in. I voted no, because personally I'd rather get beat in the Final than go out in the group stages. I can see your point though Reporter. When Liverpool went out of the Champions League in 2009 to Chelsea in the Quarter Finals (The 4-4 game) we then only had the league to concentrate on and at the time, we was in the title race. Anyways Liverpool went on to win 10 of their last 11 games in the Premier League and still lost the league (the 4-4 against Arsenal was the only blip in that run in).
So maybe you have a point, if Liverpool had of went on to reach the Semi Finals and Finals of Champions League, would we really have still won those last 10 games out of 11, with preparation for Semi Finals and maybe even Finals of the Champions League? It's very debatable. Fact is we had no other games left apart from the Prem games, we had plenty of rest, there was no distraction and Rafa basically took the shackles off them and said go out and crush everyone in your path, and we pretty did that as the results proved, winning 10 of out the last 11.

Better to go further for reputation.

We are talking about THE elite club competition in Europe right? I can't see any good reasons why you would want to go out earlier?
Does that mean if you don't think you will win the league that you should stop trying? Save up for other competitions?

Looking at the Champions League alone, yes it would be better to go as far as possible. There are financial benefits, reputation benefits, seeding benefits, and you help your league's coefficient.
The only way progressing further would hinder your club is if you had important players get injured or the team get burnt out and it ended up hurting you in other competitions. But you would need to be able to tell the future to figure that out.

7 - Since 2003/04 the team that has knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League has lost their next CL knockout tie. Challenge.

One Arsenal fan makes it 'Arsenal fans'? of course, the further you go, the better.

Obviously it is better. There is insane amounts of money to be had, not only in prize money, but in the television money, in the later rounds of the champions league.
Though in Arsenal's case, it may be a blessing in disguise to go out earlier...
