I'm really fascinated by all this sort of Space talk and always find it so interesting! Very Happy

Does anyone else other wonder is there other life? If space is infinite it feels so weird there could be planets just like ours living the same way, man what if it's humans as well? I wonder if we will ever find out, it would be crazy if there was. I also like thinking about when the world actually ends, not those crazy theories but when it will actually end in millions of years time, will there still be humans in civilisation in 200,000 years? Surely there can't be peace one earth for that long Laughing I could see a massive war probably in a few hundred years, one of those Ice ages or shit, maybe the world goes in a massive cycle every few thousand years and we all start again Surprised

Share your thoughts and answer some questions Very Happy

I love talking about space and stuff, don't we already have a thread for this?

I think Polska once created a Space Thread. I have a deep interest in space as well. I recommend you watch the TV series, "The Universe". They do a good job of teaching you a lot of information about space and physics in a simple to understand manner. The production is great too.

As for your questions, I do believe there are other life forms on other planets (some of it because of my religious teachings). Are they humans or sophisticated like us? I don't know. But I would be surprised if there weren't any basic life forms out there. There are even theories out there that life existed on Mars and was transferred to Earth. According to the Drake Equation, there are thousands, if not millions, of other life forms in our galaxy alone.

Life on Earth will end one day, it's just a matter of when and how. I think we will be long gone before our Sun dies out. My bet is on an Earth impact that wipes out humans at the very least. As for war, it might wipe out a few million of us, but I can never see a war wipe out the human race or even a billion.

No, VY Canis Majoris is the biggest one that we have discovered. If it was in place of our Sun, the surface would reach the orbit of Jupiter or Saturn.

It's kind of difficult to judge, there may be other intelligent lifeforms but could be so far away that they'd go extinct before getting a chance to observe them.

I'm sure I read a thing that said if you scaled the Earth's lifetime down to a calendar year humans would appear an hour before midnight on 31st December. Dinosaurs would only have went extinct on December 26th.

But if you realise that in a minute fraction of that time we've developed technology capable of travelling out into the solar system, and beyond what with the Voyagers, we've certainly got a good chance at finding some sort of life at least.

There actually has to be life somewhere in the Universe. It's just mathematically logical given the size.

Odds of intelligent life forming = extremely low

Although there is a large amount of planets.

Still not enough of them for the odds to be in favor of life existing.

How do you know how many there are? There are trillions of stars out there that we know of. If all those stars have on average about 9 or 10 planets in orbit, that's a quadrillion planets. If just 0.001% of those planets are in a habitable zone from their stars, we're talking about roughly 100 million planets. And if just 0.001% of those planets support life, that's about a thousand planets that have life. Seems extremely likely to me.
