Post by Guest Fri Jan 13, 2012 7:23 am

Space is awesome, especially with Kepler finding so much neat planets and solar systems, post cool articles / pictures here.

ALSO THIS THREAD WILL BE A GOD-FREE ZONE!! Stop

    http://www.universetoday.com/92547/tatooine-the-sequel-kepler-finds-two-more-exoplanets-orbiting-binary-stars/

The news that we found a planet orbiting binary stars broke out only a week and a half ago, and since then they've already found 2 more! Amazing!

Speaking of binary systems, our own Sun could be part of a binary system with a red dwarf start called, Nemesis. This star could be the cause of our periodic asteroid impacts that cause mass extinctions. Some scientists suggest that's instead a planet much larger than Jupiter.

Beyonce and Jay Z want to be the first people to film a music video in space and apparently Virgin are offering trips to space for £780,000 a ticket.

No actual scientist believes that bullshit.

Because Virgin's space program is launching it's first tourism sub-orbital flight in the upcoming years! It's a huge achievement! A music video with Beyonce and Jay-Z in Sub-Orbit would do wonders for its marketing. Why do you think they are paying them to go?

I know that it would be "huge" for them. I just think it epitomizes so much of what's wrong with society; paying fucking millions of dollars to shoot a music video when there's people from Jay-Z's old neighborhood sleeping on the street.

You are missing the point that Virgin would be paying them to do it.

And so what? We need investment in the science departments, especially space, regardless, Virgin is a privately owned company, not the government. I am sure Virgin already do enough for the community. If you are mad, be mad about USA's military budget which dwarfs all the science departments. (And to think that idiot Ron Paul wants to cut the Science budget even further)

    - I should've re-read your other post. I don't know how much Branson is going to do as far as space exploration is concerned, but I guess he's entitled to do whatever he wants with his money.

    - I agree that the U.S. spends way too much on its defense. Obama recently approved one of the biggest budgets to date, yet many Republicans are upset that he wants to put a cap on proposed increases. The defense budget that Obama's administration approved is larger than the next ten nations combined. I still don't understand how someone can be upset that the U.S. isn't spending more than that on defense...

    - I've never stated that I supported Ron Paul, so I don't know where that's coming from.

He has some good ideas. However, he has plenty that are either A) Crazy or B) Simply not going to work for a variety of reasons.

Does this count as revision for my Astronomy course? shifty

I have to do a research project and deliver a 20 minute presentation at the end of March, I think I'm doing it on "Water in the Solar System". Should be interesting.

It's amazing because just around 2 years ago we'd found a total of 240 exoplanets and they were mostly uninhabitable gas giants, whereas now it's up in the 700s plus we're finding planets in the Goldilocks zone and cool stuff like the binary ones you've mentioned.

That Stargazing program with Brian Cox and Dara O'Briain is back next Monday on the BBC.

    http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/27/alien-worlds-abound-nasa-scope-finds-26-alien-planets/

NASA's prolific planet-hunting spacecraft has hit the jackpot again, discovering 11 new planetary systems with 26 confirmed alien planets among them.
The findings nearly double the number of bona fide planets found outside our solar system by the Kepler space observatory.

Couldn't find the gif version of that but here's the video.

Found out the other day that there's an asteroid called Fanny hehe

There's a fairly small program called Cartes du Ciel which tells you what's in the sky where you are (although I think it does more advanced stuff as well). Had to use it for my labs because I have to look at asteroids, which means hanging around for hours at night in below freezing temperatures Neutral
