Gerrard shouldn't get anywhere near the first XI. At best, he should be taken as part of the squad, but no way should he start for England. Not only is he extremely naive from a tactical perspective, he's also not remotely as good as he once was. Either play Wilshere or Rooney as the furthest man forward of the midfield three. Both would do a better job than Gerrard.

Midfield should look something like this:

    Carrick/Barry_Parker/Wilshere
    Wilshere/Rooney

Only risk in playing Wilshere there is that he's largely untried in that position. He established himself as one of the best midfielders in the country last year playing as a box-to-box midfielder so it would seem more reasonable to play him there. However, he is naturally an attacking midfielder with excellent dribbling and passing ability. I personally think he should play as the furthest forward of the midfield three with Rooney in front of him. Rooney is an excellent striker and while he's also more than capable in playing in the hole, he should be played in his best position as he's undoubtedly England's best player.

Not playing Rooney up front would be a bit criminal. There's not like there's a striker in the country who would do a better job up there, except maybe the man who always scores for England but Capello mostly ignored, Peter Crouch.

If Walker can play on the left England would have two of the best fullbacks
Walker has never played at left back in his career. It would be stupid to put him there for the Euro's when we have players like Baines (arguably our best set piece taker) and Cole.

That's not a risk at all. He's played there for Bolton and its his natural position. He just wasn't good enough for Arsenal when he was fit to play that role so he was played out of position.

    Chamberlain - Gerrard - Young

Obviously stick Rooney in there after his ban.

It has to be Ledley King & Lescott at the back. I like Ledley King..

    Richards -- King -- Lescott -- Cole

    Wilshere - Parker

    Sturridge -- Rooney -- Chamberlain

    Welbeck

Wilshere in the hole while Rooney serves his ban & Gerrard next to Parker.

He's a quality centre back, but he can't play any level of football without a weeks break.

What use would he be at a tournament? How many games could be play, 3? 4 max?

Three or four games could be the entire duration of England's tournament. It's like saying there's no point in taking Wayne Rooney since he could potentially play one game only. Take him there and use him as much as possible. If he can put it in three or four games out of a maximum of six, then that's not bad at all. His quality makes him worth it. Most substitute centre backs aren't even used at all in international tournaments.

If three or four games is all we play then there's definitely no point taking him. Laughing

Playing King and Ferdinand for example in one game, then Rio with Jones or something for the next and alternating it is pointless. You need a settled side.

I wouldn't compare King & Rooney's situation but King has this unusual knack of playing at 100% regardless of the game's he's missed/ match fitness issues, etc.

He is also a great leader imo.

He is def worth the risk.

People thought he was worth the risk at the World Cup and after one or two games he was finished along with Carragher.

And Ferdinand has to go because he's our best centre back. Imagine taking them both and them both being finished before the end of the group stages.. facepalm
