Who should be the next England captain?

Rooney is quite the different player mentally from his teenager days, for better or worse. As a teenager he would charge into pressured situations like a bull now he plays for England with a chip on his shoulder 80% of the time. I don't think even a fully fit Rooney in normal circumstances would have enough impact on the major international scene.

Rooney has been poor for England. But so has everyone else.

If he ever got to a point where he plays as he does for Manchester United he would be the most important player by far.

I've thought about this a bit more, and maybe they should give it to somebody who intends to retire after the tournament. There's likely going to be a new manager after the tournament, and he might have his own thoughts about who should be Captain, best not to restrict him by having an incumbent. Imagine if it were TSO and he gave it back to Terry .
