Best player if his generation, yes. Best player ever? Now that's just a silly thing to say.

I just think it's silly, because comparing players from different generations is stupid. How can you honestly say Messi is the best ever? When players like Maradonna and Pele have graced the pitch in different generations? Football back then, is worlds apart from what it's like now. There's just too many opinions and not enough difinative facts, to out rightly say 'He's the best ever'.

It's an opinion. People base it on the skills of the players. It may be difficult to compare the two different generations, but it's not silly to try.

That's why to say "he's the best player ever" Dean, is someone's opinion. Dry Smile

How can you even compare a player with Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Villa, Alves and Pedro doing everything to get the best out of him with any other player in the modern day, let alone with Pele and Maradona.

Pelé had just as good players around him as Messi. That Santos and Brazil team had some truly sublime creative talent. Diego was the "main man" yes, but he was nowhere near as consistent as Messi. The only thing, in my opinion, he has over him is the World Cup performance in 1986. Unfortunately I highly doubt Messi or anyone else will ever match that performance.

If it was his teammates, then why hasn't any other player playing for Barca come close to Messi?

Well I know it's an opinion Danny, and I said it's a fucking stupid opinion to hold. Based on the brief points I put forward in my last post. In fact I didn't even put my arguments forward, just a basic summary of what I felt on the subject.

    And I stand by that.

So you also think that calling Diego Maradona and Pelé two of the greatest footballers ever is stupid then?

No. I don't think calling Pele and Maradonna two of the greatest footballers ever is stupid, because they are. As is Messi, but out right saying a footballer is the best ever, is stupid. Because there are different generations, and football has changed so much over the years.

I think you can pick a variety if footballers and say with assurance 'Yes, they're in the group of the best ever'. But picking out of that group who is the best ever, is silly. Because the players in that group could/would be from different generations and stages of the game of football.

    Do you understand my point?

Because the team is built around Messi. If it's not his team-mates, why doesn't he score a goal a game for Argentina?

Right, so you're saying he can only perform as he does with phenomenal players around him?

He still performs for Argentina, but not as well with Barca. That's normal. Any player would play better with people like Xavi and Iniesta around them. Ronaldo doesn't perform as well with Portugal either.
