A little overdue, but it's a new year shifty

    The table atm: http://www.90minut.pl/liga/0/liga5617.html

Right now the league is in Winter break, and there are no matches until mid February.

I wonder if Slask Wroclaw will continue their dream season in the Spring Round.

    Legia Warszawa:

In: Albert Bruce (free, Asante Kotoko FC)
Out: Manu (Beijing Rich Yellow People FC)

Manu after struggling to find a spot on the starting lineup this season, has been sold to some rich Chinese folks.

In the meantime, they find an African player to strengthen their squad with.

    Polonia Warszawa:

In: Aviram Baruchyan (free, end of contract, Beiter Jerusalem)

Midfielder, potentially a good move for them. This guy is an Israeli international and has 37 goals 237 games for Beiter.

Well you know what they say, good teams always pull through.

We've been shit this season though. The applauds should go to Legia Warszawa and Slask Wroclaw, who have both made absolute monster sides.

It'll be a massive improvement over the dump they play in now. Laughing

Hopefully the club becomes better by 2013 as well. Historically one of Poland's biggest clubs and they have the fanbase. They have financial issues though, always have to sell players.

Lech Poznan interested in Beograd defender Ivan Kecojević, who is having a great season in Serbia.

Probably looking for a long term replacement for Arboleda. This is probably his last season as even a sub. He's been woeful as of late and Wolakiewicz and Kaminski have been rocking the back line.

An interesting fact is that before the EURO in Portugal, the 3 main Portuguese clubs had attendance numbers around 20-30k, post Euro, they have attendance numbers over 50k.

The numerous Polish cities are bigger and have the potential to have bigger fanbases than in Portugal. Gornik Zabrze themselves come from a metropolitan area of over 5m people. (though they share the Katowice metro area with a gazillion other clubs Laughing)

Post by Guest Thu Jan 05, 2012 8:23 am

    Ekstraklasa 2012 so far, round-up
There are stories that shouldn’t be left on the side, there are important issues that would be of your interest. Ekstraklasa is certainly a league rich of both of them and that can be seen in discussions caused by the results of the first round, seventeen match weeks that decided the faith of teams, managers and players. It is time to look at different fate of sixteen clubs and what is waiting for them this winter – from bottom to the top.

Zagłębie Lubin (16, 3-4-10, 15-32)* – This wasn’t supposed to be that way. Interesting transfers, good previous round and ambitious coach should be a perfect match for the success that is awaited in Lubin since their win in the league few years back. Unfortunately for Zagłębie, they are closing the table and quite deservedly so – playing poorly, not presenting any ambition and fighting spirit. They are not lacking in class, definitely don’t have the weakest squad too. But when Jan Urban was sacked, replaced by Pavel Hapal, the team stumbled into further problems, the results did not improved at all. The club awaits bigger changes inside and this is badly needed – poor results have swept away fans from the stands and Zagłębie’s status fell from ambitious to laughable. Huge challenge for Hapal. Best player: Arkadiusz Woźniak

Cracovia (15, 3-5-9, 9-19) – They are certainly not the club that should be struggling as much as they do but while there might be enough quality to keep them in Ekstraklasa, they lacked character early this season after fantastic comeback last spring. Jurij Szatałow failed to inspire them but then came the Solid One, Dariusz Pasieka. His first steps was to improve spirit and it helped a lot, as much as the Krakow derby win over arch-rivals Wisła. This was their top performance but they need to improve and certainly have the quality to see better results. At least in dramatic win over Bełchatów, fans could see more of the character that may keep them in the league for another season. Best player: Wojciech Kaczmarek

Łódzki Klub Sportowy (14, 4-3-10, 12-34) – Wow, where to start? Four managers, the oldest squad, worst defence and ruined ground. Add this to financial troubles and you get the picture of a club that only recently rose from its knees and now may not restart the round. The only moment of stability seen this fall was when Michał Probierz took over and suddenly squad looked half-decent but that was short spell and manager knew he wants different, more stable and ambitious challenge than coaching that poorly run football club. Even if they somehow survive the winter, football may crush them further – there is simply no money to make all the changes they needed and last seasons’ promotion was maybe a one step too far for them. Best player: Marcin Kaczmarek

GKS Bełchatów (13, 4-4-9, 20-20) – Looking at their squad, they certainly shouldn’t be as low placed as they are and they enjoyed some really good games, especially against league leaders Śląsk at home, when they won 3-0. But this was more about the club’s structure and ambitions, which look gloom and not positive for GKS fans. They look simply too short for Ekstraklasa right now, too small against other teams that are developing. GKS reached their peak few years back but they were always to struggle to keep their position and despite some quality and experience in the squad Kamil Kiereś has, they must check the reality that mid-table position is as far as they will get. Best player: Grzegorz Fonfara

Lechia Gdańsk (12, 4-5-8, 8-15) – This is one sad story and depressing fall of the club that right now should be bossing at the top of the table, at least to the Lechia’s ambitious plans. But this was quite predictable, in a way they fell in form last season and struggled to match the created image of an attacking team. Tomasz Kafarski failed to make strong decisions, didn’t look fully in charge while at the helm but changing manager for Rafał Ulatowski shouldn’t be the only change made by Lechia and they know it. Huge winter coming up for the club, if they don’t want to have the biggest and most beautiful stadium in lower league. Best player: Wojciech Pawłowski

Górnik Zabrze (11, 5-5-7, 18-21) – One top performer and pretty average team, Górnik certainly look like their stadium right now – one stand and the rest is in a constructional mess. But when it comes down to their ground, the new stands will eventually be build, while Nawałka’s team need more fresh blood, more class to match the one of a rising star of Prejuice Nakoulma, who stood out for Górnik this season. If they are to welcome new stadium with full crowds, they may want to change their tactics of building team, because the one adopted now looks too much chaotic to bring any success, on and off the pitch. The other thing is, whether they have resources to do it any time soon… Best player: Prejuice Nakoulma

Jagiellonia Białystok (10, 6-4-7, 20-27) – If there is one team that is coming through transitional season, it’s Jagiellonia. When Michał Probierz left just before season started, the decision was made to rebuild his side, although a one that wasn’t finished either. Was it the will to cut off Probierz’s tactics or knowledge of number of talents they had, Czesław Michniewicz understood that change is desperately needed. He made one, brought many young players that maybe not performed as good as expected or as good as they can, but more importantly, his leaders failed to match his expectations too and only made him want to change the side stronger. He does it now, team suffers away from home but is still dangerous and shouldn’t be underestimated – especially with whole winter for Michniewicz to mix the experience with the youth he has in his squad. Best player: Thiago Cionek

Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała (9, 6-5-6, 15-19) – A surprise, maybe? Not so much for some, but those that will recall the infamous 0-6 they suffered to Bełchatów just few league games in, will know how things changed for Podbeskidzie later in the round. Perhaps it wasn’t one of the strange decisions from the chairman that became so irritated of his players that wanted them to play under pressure of losing contract each time they made it to the pitch. But Robert Kasperczyk should be credited for the change in results, especially that he had to give away the tactics that made him and the team famous year ago, mostly due to successful cup run. He decided to make it hard for opponents and less entertaining for fans, adopting his team of rather average quality to Ekstraklasa’s reality. Win at Legia and just one defeat in last six games were like a rope to safety for them and once their status is more clear for others, once they are regarded as dangerous even, Kasperczyk can build something closer to his concept. Few new names should help him to do so. Best player: Sylwester Patejuk

*From left - Club (position, record, goals for-against). Full league table can be found here.

I'll post the other 8 sides later.

Ekstraklasa 2011-12 Empty Re: Ekstraklasa 2011-12

Post by Guest Thu Jan 05, 2012 8:29 am

Korona Kielce (8, 6-7-4, 18-19) This is certainly the team that no one likes to play against and it’s mostly down to Leszek Ojrzyński’s tactics – to say that Korona is playing hard style… it’d be an understatement. There are no games in which they commit lower number of fouls that their rivals but they also suffered – due to financial problems Ojrzyński has short squad and suspensions hurt them eventually and despite promising start, his hard-men only finished mid-table. Which, on the other hand, is completely fair for them, even if some may say that their style is an ugly one, they made their specialty in making it the hardest possible for the others. They may not have enough class and quality, the same may be about the manager himself, but at least they know it and can adapt to the situation. That is something. Best player: Aleksandar Vuković

Widzew Łódź (7, 6-7-4, 14-12) Who would have thought that Widzew can be something more than just another relegations candidate? Especially when Czesław Michniewicz left and news were coming out about financial problems and laughable scouting section of the club? But Radosław Mroczkowski did very well, he has the youngest squad in the league and he made them solid at the back, having enough experience, while in attack, he counts on young and hard-working players. Of course, it doesn’t mean that this project is at finish, there is still a lot to improve and there may not be money to bring players that may improve Widzew’s status even further. Putting embarrassing derby defeat at home aside, this has been decent round for the club and the one thing they need right now is some stability. Best player: Jarosław Bieniuk

Wisła Krakow (6, 8-3-6, 16-13) Their goal record doesn’t show that champions have problems with defending but each of their problems this round was more or less coming from the back – especially poor home record should be a worry and when few players were sidelined by injuries (mostly Małecki and Melikson), they struggled up front with replacements playing averagely at best. Maaskant had to go after derby defeat and despite not much changed since Moskal took over, they are looking with more hope at this winter, especially since they progressed in Europa League. But there is a lot of space to improve, make their squad wider, more Polish and younger, as fans demand. This is not an easy challenge but even then probably harder than one waiting for them in Ekstraklasa, if there are willing to end at the top. Best player: Dudu Biton

Lech Poznań (5, 8-4-5, 29-12) Their goal record may look impressive but undoubtedly, you won’t find a happy Lech fan this season. They are fifth and there were games in which Kolejorz was a team simply unwatchable, despite the fact that Jose Mari Bakero still wants to copy at least part of what he learned at Barcelona to his team. But Spanish manager must be careful as he won’t find friends at the stands, he is not crowds’ favorite, and his project is way behind the schedule, while the main goal is far away from their reach. Yes, they have decent players and should be in competition for the title when May comes, but there is a feeling that Lech should be something better, something more. They are not looking to be it after seventeen games to be fair, which is frankly fault of all involved – fans who are boycotting the team, board for poor transfers and crowds, team for results and manager for his inability to change when there is a need of one. Best player: Artiom Rudnev

Ruch Chorzow (4, 9-2-6, 26-18) How good Waldemar Fornalik is, as their manager? In recent years they have been more of a feeder club for others, especially Polonia Warszawa, but they are competing with their limited resources as equals at the top. Fornalik not only can adapt to every conditions Ruch is in, and they have been through some really bad stuff recently, but also can take everything what is good out of his players and make them play enjoyable football. They are dangerous and hard-working, while there may not be any long-term plan for the club, Ruch seems to be enjoying there moment and giving the best they have each time. Sounds easy but I doubt that Waldemar Fornalik would agree with it. Best player: Marek Szyndrowski

Polonia Warszawa (3, 9-4-4, 19-15) It took them some time to get on the right track and of course standard talks of Jacek Zieliński’s departure started at one point, while the owner Józef Wojciechowski was apparently on his way to Gdansk but this is their best round in some time to be fair, while ending third is as much down to the team, as to the problems Wisła and Lech had. Zieliński should stay and probably will be supported by Wojciechowski this winter with few transfers to compete for the title, but vision of ending in top three is more real for Polonia. With fight at the top sometimes comes more pressure but in recent years we learned that Wojciechowski likes to do it the other way, and maybe with them finally competing for the championship, there may be some stability and comfort for the squad and Jacek Zieliński as well. Best player: Tomasz Jodłowiec

Legia Warszawa (2, 10-3-4, 29-10) Last few months were huge improvement to what Legia fans have seen last year and finally Maciej Skorża starts to be credited for that. Despite not having all of his wishes realized this summer, he made his team not only efficient but also attractive side, full of young players, hungry for success, with great technical ability. Their spine is also important and he has there very experienced and talented footballers from whom the younger ones can learn – Kuciak proved to be a steal of the round, Żewłakow gives them calm in defence, Vrdoljak works tirelessly, Radović enjoys best time of his career while Ljuboja is touch of class, something different to out league. Yes, Legia suffered to their Europa League distraction and wider squad is needed to build on the success from recent months but we haven’t seen as promising signs coming from Łazienkowska for a long time now. Best player: Miroslav Radović

Śląsk Wroclaw (1, 12-1-4, 31-13) Can they do it? Can they become champions? Won’t they suffer as the previous unexpected leaders after the winter break has ended? Orest Lenczyk and the team probably needs that success to be credited enough for the hard work they have put in building decent side, wide squad, with a lot of talent, that has not suffered despite longer than predicted adventure in Europe. Śląsk is enjoying the time of their lives and even with doubts over the long-term future of current squad, whether they can survive in one pack and still evolve, this is somewhat beautiful story. They are the most efficient squad in the league, adapting to conditions, doing their best each time, changing styles, tactics and that they can afford to play without any striker and still win games means very much in Ekstraklasa. Śląsk is probably the toughest side to play and even prepare to play against. Some think that only the hurricane inside the club can stop them on their road to the championship and they must be focused on their goal if they want to succeed. The title race is wide open and Orest Lenczyk knows it best how it feels to lose and the very end of it. Best player: Piotr Celeban

They did in the olden days in America when Gornik Zabrze, Ruch Chorzow and Widzew Lodz where European powerhouses. I don't really know if they have them today, or atleast I don't know about it.

It is. We may have to rely on winning the Puchar Polska to get in Europe. Then again, so does Lech Poznan.

I never underestimate the lower league sides. They are so poorly scouted that they occasionally have some pretty decent players. Furthermore, lots of shit goes down in the cup. Read This Laughing

Ekstraklasa 2011-12 Empty Re: Ekstraklasa 2011-12

On 02-11-2012 in Warszawa, Stadion Narodowy will be this season's SuperPuchar 2011/12 game! This will be the Official opening of the wonderful Stadion Narodowy! Last years EK champs Wisla Kraków vs Last years Cup Winners Legia Warszawa.

A little odd it isn't played before the start of the season. I imagine this was done because the new National Stadium wasn't ready then?

Moshe Ohayon is no longer a Legia Warsaw player. He joins an Israeli club but I don't know if Legia let him go or sold him.

In addition, the talented 19 year old twins, Mateusz and Michal Mak join GKS Belchatow after snubbing Wisla Krakow. Sad

Shame, I wanted them. We need to show more determination in the transfer market, especially in regards to Polish youth.
