He's not even the most "game changing" English player
You've gone for overkill by including Iniesta. WC and the Champions league, two games.
That I know of.
I know, but the WC is a pretty big competition to do it in, not to mention for his national team. I certainly can't think of any "defining" moment when Gerrard has made that "vital" difference in an England side.

It's worth mentioning that Henry said that in 2008 so including WC last season etc is

In an England side? Form for the national side is irrelevant when England is concerned. Fluctuates too much.

I don't care when Henry said it, you were the one "challenging" anyone to come up with other players, not him. I have no interest in proving Thierry Henry wrong, although I still highly doubt that interview is even real.

The link? No. The interview? Yes. Wouldn't be the first time an English tabloid has faked an interview with a footballer.

Thing is though if his greatness is based on scoring "vital" goals, then he sure as hell hasn't shown that for England, while the likes of Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Michael Owen, and heck even Theo Walcott, have. Not that Theo Walcott is better than Steven Gerrard or anyhting like that.

You do realise that without an actual source, and just a bunch of site refrencing the exact same interview independently without a refrence point that is as much proof as milk is a potent form of anaesthetic.

Yet there is no source of it. Seriously. I'm not saying Gerrard isn't a good player, as I've said earlier I think he's the best you've ever had. Honestly I don't know how I'd rank him (not among the best 3 of all time though), but that intervew doesn't sit right at all. Not to mention a few of the "facts" presented are just flat out wrong. If you're going to argue a player's quality then argue it on the basis of his actual performance and ability. How anyone could say that Ronaldinho wasn't the best player in the world in 2005 is a bit of a mystery.
For instance:
Why Steven Gerrard is a great player:
1. He's the most important player in the Liverpool team. He not only acts as a captain (even without the armband), but he also represents Liverpool in everything he does. If anyone thinks of "Liverpool FC" they would have a hard time not thinking about Steven Gerrard. He is Liverpool personified, a man that embodies the spirit and soul of the club. If that's good or bad is up to you to decide.
2. He is an all around player who can play almost anywhere in the middle. Be it up front as an attacking midfielder or trequarista, on the wings as a wide midfielder or winger, or even behind the midfield as a hard working ball winner. He would be a quality asset to any team.
3. His passing ability may not be on par with the world's very best passers, but he is constantly involved in attacks, either by starting them and orchestrating them, delivering that vital final pass, or even being the one to complete the attacks. Steven Gerrard may not be the "world's best" in anything specific, but is very good at a lot of different things, which makes him an important player for his team. Some could say he's the world's best all around player (I wouldn't but eh.. I suppose some would).
4. Aside from being utterly rubbish to positoin himself during the WC in 2010, Gerrard is constantly aware of how the game flows and how to position himsefl to best help his team. He, like Rooney, Xavi, Andrea Pirlo, Kaká and other quality hard working players, will always (well, mostly) put the team ahead of himself.
5. Gerrard has been cursed by being the best player in a pond of mediocre players. Only occasionally having gotten to play with quality players on a club level. (Torres and Alonoso, I'm not considering Reina as too vital to Gerrard's performances.) As a result he has achieved a lot less than he could have, had he been luckier with his timing, or even the club he appeared in Gerrard would have won a whole lot of trophies. The failures on international level are well documented, but that isn't only down to Gerrard as a bundle of highly skillful players have been largely disappointing for England.
If you're going to argue his quality then at least use some real arguements. Not some rubbish about having scored the most vital goals (not true), being the best in 2005 (Istanbul was shockingly great, but Ronaldinho's performance over the entire season was just stellar), and "he must be the best because these interviews from Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, that I can't really source properly say so".

You're acting like I think Gerrard is the best player in the world. This thread wasn't created for heated debates about this, it was merely created to give people the chance to read some famous people's opinions on Gerrard, as they debate amongst themselves whether or not he's Liverpool's greatest.
It's the obsessed Manc fans that came in and turned this into something it's not. As usual.

I didn't say I didn't expect idiot Mancs to come in and spoil it (it goes without saying that it will happen) but that's not why I created the thread itself. The thread was made because i thought it was interesting and thought people would enjoy reading it.
If a Manc made a similar thread about Scholes, I seriously doubt Liverpool fans would flood in and vehemently try to soil his name. We'd probably praise him ourselves.

Then where is it from then? From what I've seen it's been published on forums and amateur sites without any link to the real thing. I've never said that it's flat out false, I've said I doubt the authenticity of. If anyone could provide anyhting remotely like a reliable source for the Henry interview then I'll gladly cast away all doubts.

False quotes won't have been circling all forms of media for 3 years without someone proving them wrong, I don't see why you're so hung up over it.

There's no real professional media outlet that are using them. This is a quick list of the highest google hits:
"Slash and Bromance" (some sort of blogger)
"Jimmy Rice's Personal Blog"
"aconstantache" (Another blogger)
"Some Liverpool Forum"
"CaughtOffsides"
"Another Liverpool Forum"
This is not "media".
However, considering none of you actually bother to make an effort finding the source. I figured I'd have to do it myself, and found that interview is indeed authentic and was posted on the official Liverpool website in 2008. So now I don't doubt the authenticity, but I do doubt how sane Henry truly is. See, any one of you would just do that instead of linking to random blogs and clearly biased forums then I wouldn't have said anything.
Anyway. Actual source: http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/henry-why-i-d-love-to-play-alongside-stevie
At any rate. I don't see how I'm hung up over the quotes. I just don't see why I should accept things on face value that seem absurd and the only links provided for it are random blogs.

To be fair there was a guy on RedCafe who made up quotes about Kaka, saying joining United would be a dream, and they were featured on Sky Sports, the Daily Mail, MUTV, you name it.

I spoke to Steven Gerrard in a pub last week
"I ran over that kid on purpose because I fucking hate Man Utd" he explained "and I bribed that judge to let me off with beating the fuck out of that guy"
Prove those quotes are wrong.

fake quotes? liverpool fans seem to be the masters at making them. one time a liverpool fan tried to show me a quote by pele where he says "liverpool is the greatest club in the world and gerrard is absolute genius" eventually, like the rest of them, he was easily discover and was name and shamed

Look, all Scott did was post the quotes, if people are going to come in and say that they are false, at least have something to back up your claims, otherwise you just look like you're clutching at straws.
Also, RR, don't be childish.
