Nope. Not really. Increase Nasa's budget by a dozen billion and get private companies contracted and it could be done once we get the technology. (which we are near, just need a few more breakthroughs)

Experts in the field have a vested interest in it, the fact of the matter is that the money could be far better spent in other areas, including tax cuts.

It's not a waste of money, we just can't afford it right now. We need to get our budget balanced and then decrease the debt. Pumping in billions into the space program isn't helping. By the time we see any benefits from it, the country will be already bankrupt.

The budget needs to be balanced first. Let China play with space for the time being. In the mean time, give money to research and promote private company involvement in the fields like what Google is doing.
