Apart from his cowardly Iranian policy, his personal homophobia and his weird ideas about abortion, Ronald Paul seems like a sound candidate.Roloman4 wrote:I don't know who to actually vote for... Huntsman is my second favorite Republican candidate.

He... also thinks that Medicare and Medicaid are unconstitutional... which they are not...
He also opposes common sense FDA regulations.
His ideas about abortion are not weird... they are dumbass to the max... He would make a clump of cells an American citizen.
He's also unfortunately one that would return us to the late 18th century... that would be a disaster.

A lot of these candidates seem out of touch with reality.

Ron Paul is great for people not in the US.
But he has the dumbass notion that clumps of cells are citizens.
Basically he says that if states want to make sodomy illegal let them be.
He's insane as far as states' rights go, if you live in a fucking bible-belt state, you are fucked, if you can't move out, you'll essentially be living in a theocracy.

I never understood the whole "states rights" thing. Isn't it stupid to have one law in one sate and another law in another state?

that's a pretty extreme example and highly unlikely.

Have you ever been to Louisiana/Alabama/Georgia/Texas... For fuck's sake look at Texas' governor?
Anything can happen.
Ahmed, States' rights is basically a principle that states that states have more of a right than the federal government to legislate.

I understand what it means, I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. I think it's stupid that states have more rights than the federal government (especially when it comes to making laws).

The whole battle over it began with John C. Calhoun and his Southern Democrats angry at the legislation the Whigs and such were making which didn't benefit them. John C. Calhoun as governor of South Carolina even threatened to outright disobey a legislation passed, until Andrew Jackson threatened to invade.
The reasoning is that the federal government may not always represent the interests of the states that well.

I think that states should have certain rights but not on fundamental issues like separation of church and state, free speech, racial equality, and other landmark American issues.

No, its perfectly normal in a Federation made up of formerly independent States with differing cultures, prevailing opinions etc. Brazil, Germany, The United Kingdom, The European Union, Canada, all these bodies have smaller "states" or "countries" within them where the laws are slightly different.
The US itself was initially a confederation, the reason States Rights were drafted into the Constitution was simply to convince States to join the Union. Had the Constitution demanded that the States give up all Legislative power, it would never have got off the ground.

Romney and Rick Santorum () are leading Ron Paul in Iowa by the slightest of margins, with about half the votes counted.

I'll be surprised if Rick Santorum wins. He was far from Romney and Paul in the pre-election surveys.

Only a hundred votes between Santorum and Romney
Yes, surprising for Santorum, but that's what rallies in 99 counties can do.
