He could have just been protecting Rooney.

Why should he start Rooney ? Hernandez scored on the international break & vs Valencia, Berbatov has been in good form, Rooney has to earn his place and he's had enough opportunities to do so.

He's got no confidence has he? When he doesn't have the ball, he's sprinting back and making tackles- typical Rooney. With the ball, there's nothing there. Avoiding the tackles, running with it slowly, no little tricks- nothing like him

Maybe he should be playing reserve squad games. Chamz is right; Chicarito and Berb are on form. Man Utd is already playing catch up, dropping "silly points" left and right. They can't afford to waste time giving Rooney first team starts just for the sake of restoring his fragile self-esteem. If he's not good enough right now, the he's not good enough right now. How is he going to get his form back? He's gotta play games at the highest level, playing in the reserves won't do him much good
