    So?

Whoever bid £70 million isn't going to get him. Why would Porto put a release clause and accept a bid £30 million less?
    scratch

A release clause isn't an asking price. It's a bid that the selling club cannot refuse. If somebody really did bid £70m I'd be very surprised if Porto didn't rip their hand off in the most violent, eager handshake ever known to man.

I know what a release clause is.

Why put a release clause in, in the first place if they're going to accept a bid much less? Seems stupid to me.

I'm not saying they won't accept just questioning why they would put a release clause in at all if they were happy to sell?

Because that's the best price they are going to get. As ayvee pointed out, there's nothing that says they cannot accept a lower price. The release clause is a combination of appeasement for the player (in knowing that they can force the team to sell if somebody wants them badly enough) and security for the team (in knowing that if they have to sell him, they will get a price certain).

They put the release clause in at the time of the contract signing, not last week. Nobody knows for sure what is going to happen at the beginning of a contract.

Edit: Actually, the did sign the contract pretty much last week. Regardless, the principle of a release clause is the same. And more importantly, this story is bullshit. Nobody offered that price.

I understand the whole point of the release clause. However how does it give security? They then have to allow Hulk to talk to the club who meets it (which I doubt anyone will) but without a release clause they don't have to accept shit.

I was using Hulk as an example but reading back over it, it sounds stupid because of the size of the release clause.

When they put the release clause in you are telling me they didn't think anyone would try to sign him?

The release clause is for the benefit of the player. The pricetag on it is for the security of the club. They know they don't have to sell him for less than 100m if they don't want to. Yes, that is a ridiculous figure. But maybe Hulk and his agent were cocky enough to think that some day he might be worth that much to some club.

Come on man, this isn't that hard to understand.

I have said a few times now I understand the whole point of a release clause. Just seems a ridiculous figure to be there if they accept a huge amount less (not in this case obviously).

The bigger the figure, the better it is for the club. When they put the clause in, they probably figured they'd accept way less than that. But if the player and his agent are willing to accept that high of a figure, why not put it in? It's better for the club.

I get why its there totally. But to me if I wanted him and saw that I wouldn't even try for him. They'd still expect in that region maybe £20-£30 million less which is still huge. Fuck that.

It's obviously rubbish. Nobody is going to pay Ronaldo money for a guy who has three international caps at the age of 25

His agent is trying to get some interest going. But in affect saying Porto rejected that amount it will scare interested parties away.

You may have bid 25million before you heard of a buyout now if you are interested and you know the clause is 100million, what is your first bid?

I think that is why the 100million price tag makes sense even if they accept less. It will be more than if there was no outrageous clause

Reports in Spain claim Atletico Madrid have inserted a clause in Sergio Aguero's Manchester City deal that means he cannot be sold to Real Madrid for two seasons.
