I know what a release clause is.

Why put a release clause in, in the first place if they're going to accept a bid much less? Seems stupid to me.

I'm not saying they won't accept just questioning why they would put a release clause in at all if they were happy to sell?

Because that's the best price they are going to get. As ayvee pointed out, there's nothing that says they cannot accept a lower price. The release clause is a combination of appeasement for the player (in know that they can get out of somebody wants them that badly) and security for the team (in knowing that if they have to sell him, they will get a price certain).

Because that's the best price they are going to get. As ayvee pointed out, there's nothing that says they cannot accept a lower price. The bigger the figure, the better it is for the club. When they put the clause in, they probably figured they'd accept way less than that. But if the player and his agent are willing to accept that high of a figure, why not put it in? It's better for the club.
