Former Feyenoord defender Mark Wotte has been chosen as Scotland's first performance director.
The 50-year-old is a former technical director with Feyenoord and has managed clubs in his homeland, Egypt, Qatar, England and Romania.
His appointment was announced by the Scottish Football Association at a Thursday media conference.
The SFA had already stated that the position would not be filled by a top football coach or manager.
The successful candidate was required to combine coaching and administrative experience as well as political awareness for a wide-ranging role.
And he will be asked to "develop a new Scottish style of play".
Scotland have failed to qualify for the last six major international competitions and a performance director was one of the recommendations to come from Henry McLeish's Review of Scottish Football.
The SFA performance system has been backed by £10m worth of investment to be made available over the next five years to bring the principles into effect.
They include:
* A strategic plan to ensure 10,000 hours of quality ball time for elite players
* Creating a "Best v Best" culture
* Creating a world-class coaching community
R.I.P Scottish football.
