It's weird though, look at David Villa, he plays on the wing alot As his starting position but I would still classify him as a striker.

Yeah, but that doesn't make the position of a winger the same as a striker, which was the point originally.

Henry did this a lot as well, would always drift out wide to the left.

Tbf, the term winger hardly exists in it's original context these days

Also, Villa's starting position for Barcelona is on the wing, if I completely missed your point Sean.

Oh right, the way it was worded confused me.

I still see him as an out and out striker too, just being played on the wing in Barca's system because Messi is in the centre doing his thing.

Inside Forwards playing on the Wing are strikers.

Otherwise they are Wingers or Playmakers on the Wing (Nasri for example)

I'm referring to the position, ie, out wide on the flank, and not in the centre.

The original point was just the position, regardless of specific roles/players.

Depends on alot of things and it's hard to say because some wingers cut in and score, they don't stay out wide while sone wingers are literally playing in the centre. (messi, young)

I wouldn't say that Messi is a winger. He is a classic #10 that is positioned wide due to their formation.

Did I say anything about this season? I am speaking in general. He has played wide more than central so I look at the big picture and not one season.

Then why say IS positioned wide?

He played centrally a lot last season too. Less so the season before that but would still often switch with Eto'o.

It's not as if the front line is fixed in position anyway especially at Barca since Messi comes deep alot and Villa/Pedro have the license to go where ever they want.

Because if you look at Barcelona at any given time (including this season) he goes out wide as much as he creates inside, but that does not make him a winger. Lets go back to the final year that Henry was there along with Eto'o and Messi. That was the last time I saw him play primarily wide before being moved inside and since he was moved inside he still doe a lot of work outwide, but he is not a winger. That is all I am saying. Please don't make this out to be bigger than it needs to.

He isn't wrong though. Wingers are forward. Michel's total football defined wingers as forwards and vice versa.
