Re: Wingers = strikers?
No. If wingers were strikers, they'd be called strikers.

No. They could be classed as forwards but not strikers.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
Some people think so. But the real question is, are wingers=wingers? A lot of "wingers" these days aren't even wingers.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
The reason for this is because of an interesting (more like shite IMO) viewpoint from a member (Again, IMO, a shite member) nicknamed Jela.

They are wingers who like to mix things up by cutting inside.GCU wrote:Some people think so. But the real question is, are wingers=wingers? A lot of "wingers" these days aren't even wingers.

All wingers can be classified as forwards, as can strikers. A winger is not a striker though, they're completely different positions.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
A winger is an attacking player who is stationed in a wide position near the touchlines. They can be classified as forwards.

Not all forwards are strikers though, so I don't understand why you posted that.Jelavic18|RFC wrote:A winger is an attacking player who is stationed in a wide position near the touchlines. They can be classified as forwards.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
That's not a winger, that's a (say it's a "left winger") left sided lateral midfielder according to this KNVB manuel i have to study.
It also says. "Wingers protrude to the bi-line when running from deep positions."
Players who cut in(especially onto their better foot) are certainly not wingers, and you don't need a manual to know that. The type of players recommended for this role they've got here are David Silva and Florent Malouda, I assume they mean this as if they were playing in that position as we already know Silva is a central player, but it definitely fits Malouda's description in cutting in and very rarely getting to the bi-line. He ain't no winger.
There are also "Wing forwards" who establish themselves on the left side of an attacking formation but often move centrally to recieve the ball and even drop deep into midfield at times but rarely receive the ball on the left side of the attack or at least do not assume that role often. I assume that's the current Arjen Robben type player. But i need to read it more. It's really insightful.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
Malouda sounds like he fits the Wing Forward definition more then anything else.

Re: Wingers = strikers?
Yeah it sounds identical but the definition seems distorted. On the second paragraph though it does say that a left lateral player or whatever tries to dictate the play with passing and movement firstly in midfield. I think the left forward position is that even though you can pick up the ball in deep areas, you don't dictate the game where you would start to look for other receives and to link passes. I can relate to that in that Robben is able to pick up the ball anywhere and basically be very direct, he doesn't necessarily interplay with midfield always, he usually looks for other attackers like a striking partner or even a normalized winger to interact with. At least that's what I can make out, or he'll just run it himself dribbling past everyone.
With Malouda when Ive watched him play, he has the traits of a midfielder. He has a nice dribble on him when the time allows but I always feel his first reaction when receiving the ball is to play it to someone elses' feet straight away or maybe carry it, and then play it back.
Maybe his goals to game ratio which would be very respectable for a forward distorted this as well but from what ive seen, his goals mainly come from getting unmarked finishes after making runs from midfield. But I need to read it more to understand it properly

Re: Wingers = strikers?
What is the point of classifying them like that? Why is there this need to categorise everything? Most of them are attacking players, or 'Forwards' if you like, some of them play a more defensive role, eg. Park, so couldn't really be classed as that.
