Used the telegraph as the Sky Sports formatting messes up for me.The development came as Villa
pulled out of advanced negotiations to appoint Steve McClaren because of an
internet-led backlash from supporters.
Rafael Benítez has also been ruled out of the running, having also received a
phone call yesterday from the club’s hierarchy.
It is now up to Martínez to decide whether he wants the job – and there were
indications last night that he could be minded to stay at the DW Stadium –
but Villa’s interest in him is not in doubt.
Villa’s approach was confirmed on Wednesday night by Wigan
Athletic chairman Dave Whelan. “Aston Villa have acted above board
and in a totally professional manner,” he said.
“They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday
at the time and I granted Villa permission. He arrived back yesterday and I
presume he has spoken to Villa. I have made it clear to him I will be
extending his contract

Some Villa fans have been sceptical as to whether he is a big enough name or not but sometimes having a less known manager can be a blessing in disguise.
Martinez has already shown at Swansea and Wigan that he is a very good manager and he can not only get the results needed but he can do it by playing a nice brand of football that the Villa fans would like to see.

I think he's a good up and coming manager, very smart guy if you've ever seen he be a pundit, but if I were Villa I'd go for Rafa instead -- you can't really go wrong with either imo though.

He turned them down and signed a new contract with Wigan, not sure if he's loyal or just silly. Probably a bit of both.

Rafa turned them down did he not?

I think that was class from Martinez. Whelan showed so much faith in him, and could have sacked him within reason a couple of times. Paying back that faith - though it may be construed as naive in today's world - is just the sort of thing that shows the type of man Martinez is. Props to him.

Was talking to one at Uni the other day about Downing, said he wouldn't join us because Villa are as big a club as Liverpool, which is why Barry never moved to Anfield.

Are you stalking me now? I'm flattered, but I don't swing that way.

Villa losing all their options for a manager is now making my summer enjoyable...and they thought they were getting Ancelotti

Really surprised Martinez didn't take it.
Guess hes waiting for a top 4 PL club or Barcelona then.

I was made up Martinez stayed with Wigan. A nice junk of loyalty and it's great to see in today's game. A good bit of football romance right there. I like Martinez, always have and after Dalglish, he's definitely someone I would consider as a candidate of managers to take over after the Kings final bow. Hopefully not for a few years yet though.

The chairman in his interview reckons Martinez will see off his contract and then join a big club either in the Prem or abroad...I reckon he will manage in Spain at a club like Atletico/Valenica or summin like that. Can't see him going to the likes of Madrid/Man United/Inter etc.

Huge respect for Martinez, he seems to have a really good relationship with DW. Like DW said, I can see him leaving in 2years or so and managing one of the top clubs in the PL, hope so anyway
