FA Charges Ferguson for Ref Comments (Again)

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for comments about referee Howard Webb.

The comments in question were made in the build-up to the 2-1 Premier League win over Chelsea on 8 May.

Even though Ferguson spoke positively about Webb, he broke FA rules which state no manager should speak about a referee prior to a match.

The Old Trafford club's manager has until 1600 BST on 16 May to respond.

Seems a bit harsh to charge him from saying Webb is a good ref, but I suppose by saying he's a good one it also implies there are bad refs too and the FA don't like that.

Oh and before people go "He's blatantly trying to affect Webb", he's a professional referee. He's supposed to be able to deal with media attention and remain unbiased no matter what

Problem with that, the media are a different entity from the FA. So the FA can't tell the media jack shit, the media can ask what they like. And to be honest I can Ferguson getting away with it any way. He'll most likely say 'I didn't know' Though I'm sure as professional manager going on nearly 30 years, you'd think he knows this. Saying that though, could have forgot, suppose that's just old age for you though.

The rule has only come in recently though Dean..

They came in after David Moyes said some ref was in our favour before the FA Cup Semi Final.

Well as far as I'm aware, you can't directly talk about a referee right before a game. And we know he's not trying to affect Webb. But there rules are in place and Ferguson broke that rule. It's as much idiocy on his part, as it is a stupid rule to be fair.
