Both players intended to kick the ball at the ad board out of frustration. The only difference is Rio actually apologized right after kicking the ball at the woman. But that doesn't mean Messi meant it.

When Messi made contact with the ball, it was still in play.
When Ferdinand kicked the ball the ref had clearly blown for a freekick and he then proceeded to smash the ball into his own fans.
Messi seemed to be aiming for the advertising boards as well.

The ball was already going out and messi couldn't save it, so he just smashed it into the crowd, doesn't matter what his intentions were...he could have just done a simple kick out. we don't know if he tried to hit the adboard or not.

He wanted to give his team more time to get back so he kicked it up into the stands, happens plenty of times a game

Because if he wanted to hit the fans, he would have hit it higher than that. It was only a yard above the ad board.
