Krul should have been sent off, the trash talking and time-wasting between each penalty were disgraceful.

That was Krul. I wanted to see Costa Rica advance. Well at least that means Argentina will face the weaker team in the semis.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Van Gaal is a football mastermind. How many other manages have the balls to take off their goalkeeper at the last minute for the penalties? Not even Ferguson. How many other managers have the balls to take off their star striker and captain for a shitty Schalke player with 10 minutes to go? Nobody. Van Gaal has made two massive calls, orchestrated the total destruction of Spain, battered Chilé and got his team in to the World Cup Semi Finals. He is deserving of all plaudits heading his way.

It's a pretty ballsy move to sub the keeper for pens. Add that to the fact he's got his tactics spot on in every other game so far too.Scott_LFC wrote:Why are people hailing this as a Van Gaal tactical masterclass? Bloody hell.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Why the hell does it take balls to change GK for the penalties? It was obviously something that was planned, maybe Krul was better at them in training. Hardly takes balls, Christ.
Yeah, Van Gaal got his tactics spot on, couldn't even get his side to score in 120 minutes against Costa Rica with the likes of Robben, Sneijder, Van Persie and the GOT Kuyt on the pitch. Wow, so much tactical awesomeness.

Because if it doesn't work he looks like an idiot. When Ferguson had the opportunity to do it in 2005 he shit out because he didn't want to be putting in a goalkeeper who wasn't properly warmed up. He conceded all five penalties. It was an extraordinary decision and it paid off brilliantly, give credit where it's due.
They hit the post three times, completely dominated the game, you can't have a go at him for that.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Another horrific refereeing display. I assume FIFA has given orders for referees not to "ruin the spectacle" by having the audacity to give out red cards or penalties. I thought the Costa Rican LB and Martins Indi should both have gone, and there was at least 1 clear penalty for Costa Rica not given.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Holland were the better team and on the balance of play they deserved to go through. It's a shame on Costa Rica, they did the hard work of keeping it at 0-0 for 120mins and chance it on the even footing of a shootout only to let the composure they showed against Greece disappear.
I'm fairly sure the Krul substitution was pre planned. In training they've probably determined that Krul is a far superior penalty stopper than Cillessen. It's not that large a leap of faith when you consider that they used 4 keepers during qualifying and that most thought Krul was dead set to be 1st choice.

Can't wait for Van Gaal to absolutely flop at Man United, especially after all the extreme overrating going on right now.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
You have to be extremely shit to flop at United. Even when Ferguson was senile, writing books where he talked about feuds he remembered that could never have happened, planning to use Smalling to take out Messi, believing Cleverley and Welbeck were as good as Thiago Alcantara, dropping Pogba for Park and Rafael etc. nobody could get more points than us in the league and in his last season he walked it. Van Gaal will be fine.

I agree. The only way ManUtd will flop is if Van Gaal purposely flops.

Who were the keepers in that 05 situation?

Tim Howard and Roy Carroll. Ferguson had Howard warm up but opted for Carroll in the end.

I really have no idea how neither van Persie nor Sneijder scored in that game.

Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Agreed, and I'm not even sure about RR's claims that he would have taken the blame/looked like an idiot if he failed. Cillessen has looked awful in this World Cup, taking him out wasn't a ludicrous action. Still, he's done a good job I suppose.Keyser Söze wrote:Holland were the better team and on the balance of play they deserved to go through. Re: World Cup 2014 discussion thread.
Fun fact(s): Argentina have never lost in the semi-finals of the World Cup. The Netherlands have only lost once, in 1998. Both have made the semi-finals four times.
