A body found floating in a Polish canal has been identified by a family member as that of an Irish soccer fan who came to the country for the European Championship, an official said.
Deputy chief prosecutor Wlodzimierz Marszalkowski told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the family member confirmed the identity of the body as James Nolan, who went missing early Sunday in the northern city of Bydgoszcz. He would not identify the family member, but said it was a close relation.
Documents in Nolan's name were found on the corpse. Marszalkowski said an autopsy would be held on Thursday to establish cause of death.
James Nolan, 21, of Blessington, County Wicklow, disappeared early Sunday in the northern city of Bydgoszcz, sparking a huge search effort in the city. Police divers found a body early Wednesday and authorities were awaiting the arrival of Nolan's father, Jimmy, and other family members later to make a formal identification.
"There is a high probability that this is the body of the man we have been searching for," a spokesman for prosecutors, Jan Bednarek, told AP.
The body was found lying face down in fast-flowing water of the Bydgoszcz Canal and trapped by a weir that runs across it. The canal is an offshoot of the city's Brda River, and brings water for a small hydroelectric plant.
No signs of violence were apparent, Marszalkowski said. Robbery didn't appear to be the motive since 600 zlotys ($200) and a credit card were found on the corpse, he said. An autopsy was planned for Thursday.
The clothing on the body matched a description given by friends of what Nolan was wearing when he went missing, Marszalkowski said.
Police and firefighters, some in boats and others with dogs, had been searching along the river, canal and adjacent waste ground Tuesday and again on Wednesday. Moments before the body was found, two divers in an inflatable dinghy were seen speeding toward the site. A police cordon was quickly set up around the area, which is near a museum and a church.
In a sign of mourning, someone later placed two white candles near the place where the body was found.

Sounds like he got a bit too drunk and fell in. You'd think his mates would all stick together though if there out drinking in a place like that.

He was merely supporting his country, the game of Football had not really much to do with his death.

He could've got pissed and fell in a river anywhere.

Robbie was Keane to pay tribute to Ireland fan Nolan after Galaxy goal

Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane paid tribute to the family of Irish football fan James Nolan after scoring a goal in LA Galaxy's 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

Nolan, 21, of Blessington, County Wicklow, was in Poland to follow Keane and the Irish national team during their European Championship run went missing last Sunday and his body was found on Wednesday in a canal in northern Poland after an apparent accidental drowning.

Keane's tribute came after his goal in the 30th minute as he ran toward the club's bench where he was handed a Galaxy shirt that read 'RIP James Nolan' on the back.

For the 31-year-old Irish captain, who has scored 53 goals in 120 games for the national team, the gesture was important for his grieving nation.

He said: 'It was a young Irish fan who went to Poland, 21 years of age, and unfortunately drowned.

‘Obviously, the whole country was sad and I called his father today to send my condolences and to say that my thoughts were with him and the family.’

'It was just a gesture because the Irish people are very close and they stick with each other through good times and bad times. He was a big, big soccer fan and it was a shame, so it was just a show of respect really.'

Keane said he intends to send the shirt to Nolan's family back in Ireland.

Former Everton loanee Landon Donovan and striker Mike Magee were also on target as the Galaxy won their third game in a row.

I can't feel any sympathy if he fell in because he was drunk.

RIP James, a tragedy that he died whilst on holiday watching his country in a big tournament. Thanks to the Polish police for finding him so quickly and giving some closure to his family and friends.

    Good. Join the club.

    Nice gesture by Keane, though.

Very nice gesture by Keane. This guy was young, probably did not think everything through and it cost him his life.
