They finished 4th though, above Chelsea.

Because we finished 4th, and Chelsea are going straight to the groups, so not even taking the play-off spot. It's a pathetic rule, but only the English clubs would bring it into play.Sarmz wrote:ahlycotc wrote:I fell sorry for Spurs. They should be allowed to enter the Champions League.
Why? They bottled a 13 point lead, they had the chance to finish 3rd but failed.

Tottenham should blame Liverpool for being shit in the league in 2005. They messed up the system.

Re: England's Champions League conundrum
You'd feel the same if Arsenal finished 4th, and Chelsea did finish below us. UEFA need to sort it out. Chelsea deserved it, don't get me wrong, but if they went into our play-off spot fair enough, but straight into the groups? It's ridiculous to be honest. You'd all feel the same way if your team was in the scenario. Watch Bale and/or Modric go now.

Champions of the entire CL do deserve an automatic spot. It makes sense.
The system is fine. Even IF Arsenal got 4th.. I would still agree with this whole scenario.

I think it's bullshit, a team over 38 games get in a position to qualify for CL and lose it because of that, horrible really..

Unlucky*
Do you guys want to have Man City, United, Arsenal auto-in. Tottenham still have to qualify.. then Chelsea auto?
What teams get knocked out then? From another league?

I agree with this aswell, you can not have the Champions League without the Champions from the year before being in it.N wrote:Champions of the entire CL do deserve an automatic spot. It makes sense.

Yeah I do feel sorry for Spurs I guess. I'd be royally pissed off if it happened to us.

If Arsenal have to go through the qualifiers this would have been the worse scenario out of that complete shit match

Re: England's Champions League conundrum
i dont see what is wrong, if youre champions then you should be in the next edition. doesnt matter what happens in the league, you cannot have such a legitimate competition like this without the champions involved the next season
feel sorry for spurs but if ur champion you deserve to be in it again is very simples
i dont really know about this play off or auto group stage whatever but i beleive champion no matter the league position should be in the next edition regardless

The World Cup champions don't secure a spot in the nect edition. I don't mind that Chelsea secured a spot, it's that Spurs don't.

champions league is an annual event, qualification done over 9 months
world cup takes place every 4 years and qualification is done over 3 years

Realistically Spurs should just get it, if you don't perform in your domestic league that qualifies you to even attempt to win it in the first place, then what do you expect. They really fucked this one up because Liverpool fluked it and now Chelsea have

btw ahly, logistics is different
for world cups the host nation get auto entry that is plus ontop of their already set allocation of participants
you wouldnt give auto entry to the host nation of champions league

Re: England's Champions League conundrum
Perhaps using the same format as 2005/06 might have been more fair. Liverpool got in for winning the whole thing the year before and started in the 1st qualifying round,

Apples to oranges.
A host nation for a WC for example plays at least three matches at home. The "host nation" for CL is only the final match.
Anyways, I'm not even saying that Chelsea shouldn't qualify for the next edition. I'm just saying Spurs deserve it more than Chelsea because they actually were better over 38 matches, playing against the same teams as Chelsea.

Re: England's Champions League conundrum
Chelsea deserve the chance to defend the trophy agreed, but 4th place is a CL play-off spot. Why can't there be a 5th English team? In August, we would've taken 4th thinking it was the same as the year we got there before. Who the fuck knew this was going to play out? Chelsea go straight into the groups and we play in the play-off. Or play a play-off for the play-off, I don't have a problem with that. We earned 4th spot over a 38 game league campaign, granted we blew 3rd, but even when we blew it, we still would've taken it. The club's aim was to finish in the top 4. I'm delighted we got 4th, just pissed that a rule stops us from even having the chance to play in a play-off.
