It has provided this though, stripped of the captaincy twice in 2 years. Top bloke.

I don't think Terry should have been reinstated last year/in 2010. Whenever it was.

Ashley Cole is vilified by the media and even certain sections of England 'fans', he'll never be chosen.

I don't think he can pull it off. He's not in an influential position on the pitch....and the way that the public generally perceive him doesn't help either.
I personally like him for England....in the last World Cup he was our best player, but that's not the only reason to make someone captain.
Also Rio because he probably won't be fit enough....and besides that if Terry can't have it I don't think it's appropriate that the brother of Anton gets it either.

I think Rooney can mature..if not for that one stamp then I think people would feel very differently.
He has a lot of things going for him....he is coming towards the peak of his career, he is our best player, he is in a central position on the football pitch (especially when you consider that he drops back to midfield), and he himself is an influential and vocal person on the field. If Rooney didn't have any of that temperament about him then he'd probably be a worse captain.

Re: Next England captain?
I doubt Hart will be given the captaincy.
Lets be honest, if it's going to be any City player, Micah Richards would be a better option. Unfortunately Capello has some sort of brain tumor that prevents him from picking the best right back in the country.

Smalling and Jones are regulars in the squad.Zzonked wrote:I doubt Hart will be given the captaincy.

Richards should be in the squad guaranteed seriously. God knows how he's not.

Richards? Really?
I would think Hart is better at handling the media, and leading the team in general.

But can he politically aid the FA and help with marketing?

Of course he can. He's not controversial, he's the futue of England, he's a good looking man, he's in a position that ensures he will play for years, he plays for a highly marketable team, and he seems intelligent enough.
So yeah. He can

Lescott maybe ?
Its a bit harsh to assume Wilshere/Jones will take over the role in the future they're both young and it puts them under pressure from the media.

Does Lescott even get in the team?
They might aswell just not have a captain, they will probably just get knocked out in the group stages at the Euro's anyway

He should never even play for England again, it might extend his career keeping Liverpool down and taking all the credit for everything.

If I am wrong about the importance of the captaincy, which is possible, I have been wrong before, then it should not belong to Gerrard, as he has overseen failure after failure.

Obviously you have to pick a captain, but it's not that important. They should just choose one of their experienced players and focus on the action on the pitch.

Everyone wants rid of the experienced players, though. In my opinion, it would send out a terrible message if they gave Gerrard the role.cheesy wrote:Obviously you have to pick a captain, but it's not that important. Re: Next England captain?
If I was biased, I would say Gerrard.
Hart probably, he doesn't seem like scum, although you could say the same for most of the 'next generation' of England players.
