how the fuck is it scientific?
my mate who is a Wolves season ticket holder is also a celtic fan. in this 'scientific' study he would be classed a Wolves fan right?
so no vote for celtic, despite making the trip to park head 10 times a season!!!
scientific?
How about you stop making assumptions.
Their methods are entirely scientific, their data pool is well within the ranges required for it to be considered scientific, and it is the most accurate analysis one can do without going door to door. I assume if your friend was part of this survey it would be up to him wether or not to classify himself as a wolves fan, and a celtic fan, or just a wolves fan.
so you know that those were the options?
were the subjects told to pick their one favourite team or told they could list multiple? now whos making assumptions?
you're correct in that i assume the survey was conducted on an individuals one favourite team. however (and i'm assuming here), i dont think thats particularly scientific!

Granted I made an assumption, but it would still be up to the person being asked the question what to consider himself. There are probably a fair share of the Liverpool fans who also go to other games.
Considering the report follows all the guidelines in statistical theory and is well within the ranges to be considered relevant and probable, it is without question scientific. Their methods are scientific, their data pool is scientific, and their reports are used by highly respected footballing institutions. It's as scientific as it gets.
Your 9M fan base figure from 2003 is largely in result of Japan's biggest star, Shunske Nakamura. Who provided you with an estimated 7M Japanese fans. By far your biggest fan base.

You're saying we have 7m japanese fans? That is fucking ludicrous. You said we have a European fanbase of 2.6M
That means that we are already over 9m. You're figures are total BOLLOCKS and haven't added up throughout the whole thread.

Nakamura didn't sign for Celtic until 2005. What the fuck are you drinking tonight?

Sorry , the 7M fan numbers are from 2009. I seem to have missread it.
My numbers are just fine. If anything your 9M is grossly under-rated. I have never claimed that you have less than 9M supporters.
From what I've seen your numbers are more likely to be in the 11-12M range than the 9M range.

No idea. Haven't seen any numbers for Newacastle world wide. As I said, you can't make a comparision without anything to compare.
So far the confirmed numbers for Celtic are:
Japan: 7M (By far your biggest)
Europe: 2.6M
US and Canada: 1M
Unfortunately I haven't found anyhting for Newcastle. So for all I know it might be bigger, or it might be smaller.

The figure I've seen everywhere for Newcastle is 6m worldwide. We've just established Celtic have around 7m in Japan alone. Can you now see how ridiculous this thread is?
Good job on getting those statistics anyway

As I said, whomever has the most supporters is a non issue in my opinion. However, I have yet to see any reliable number for Newcastle, but it stands to reason that a club with an Asian super star would be higher than a club without one.
Manchester United has 40M fans in Korea. Entirely down to Park Ji Sung.

Shunske Nakamura's popularity in Japan caused a small percentage of the country to follow Celtic and come into the fan catagory. He's like their Lionel Messi.

If it didn't matter you wouldn't have made the outrageous claim that you had more supporters worldwide than Celtic.

I think Celtic will also have a lot in South Korea as well, Ki is this years Korean player of the year. But there's no way to find out figures, quite good that you managed to find what you did though.

Buying a Nakamura shirt doesn't make you a Celtic fan.
I bought a Wilshere shirt with shorts and watched almost every game for Bolton when he was there. Doesn't make me a Bolton fan/supporter . I actually dislike Bolton a bit.

Celtic have more fans in ONE COUNTRY, Japan, than newcastle do in the entire world.
Shows the true extent of how deluded some of you are to think Newcastle had more.

How do you establish who is a fan in Japan? Someone that buys a shirt of a player who is also Japanese? The Maestro wrote:Celtic have more fans in ONE COUNTRY, Japan, than newcastle do in the entire world.

And if you were asked if you are a Bolton fan you would say no, and as a result not considered part of the fanbase in the survey. I do imagine that after Nakamura left Celtic their fan base in Japan might have dropped significantly though, but that is speculation.

Nope, that would be shirt sales, which is something else entirely.

Are you telling me 7 million people came forward and said they were Celtic fans? Or was it a survey panel ? Or what?

I would imagine it was a survey with a data pool. Unfortunately I don't know the exact details. That's how it worked with the other market analysis company I looked at though.

now your assuming im a celtic fan!!!!
take that back. i have no second team, im not a fucking cretin.
i support one team, i support them properly by possessing a season ticket and attending as many games home and away as is reasonably possible. i may appreciate the football that is played by other clubs in far flung corners of the world, but would never be a fan of them. i support a team in my country, no one elses, i would never forsake them or my glorious nation in pursuit of greener pastures elsewhere.
my team may be shit, ordinary at best. but they're my shit and i love them wit every part of my being!
what im trying to say is i have no allegiance towards celtic, i am a Wolves supporter.
how dare you?!
from the above paragraph, you can probably work out i have a very different view of what a fan is than what (and forgive me, im assuming here) your 'scientific' survey suggests.
i said nothing about 9M fans, i just think celtic have a larger fan base than newcastle both in the UK and abroad. and i suspect celtic have more followers in the UK than any other team. your survey does does not disprove that.

Sorry if I insulted you
Your view on a fan is different than that of the survey, that doesn't mean the survey wasn't conducted in a scientific way. By your defintion, the ones that go to games, the only real indicator of a fan would be season ticket holders, and those on the waiting list for a season ticket. Correct?
The survey shows that Celtic has 1.4M fans in the UK. Manchester United and Liverpool both have over 4M, and Arsenal have over 3M. That alone disproves that.
