I think it most likely football because how the term is used in other "similar" sports. Just think about it that you have American football, Association football, Australian Rules football, Canadian football, Gaelic football, etc.

Football came first, back centuries ago. Soccer is a recent thing and as far as I know, they only use it because of the fact that they have their own version of football over there.
