Was Dalglish the right choice? Empty Was Dalglish the right choice?

Post by Guest Mon Sep 19, 2011 1:01 am

Everything seemed to go well last season. Liverpool started to play some good football... Then Summer came.

He signed players like Charlie Adam and Henderson along with Carroll who he'd already bought in January who clearly don't fit into the fast pass and move style that was being played last season. He sold Meireles (who played well in the system last season) and has benched the likes of Maxi.

Then there is todays game, 10 men... Overrun by Spurs and refuses to make a change at half time. Spurs continue to steamroll Liverpool, still nothing changed, 9 men... nothing changed. And it looks like they may get beaten Arsenal style.

Add that to the fact he plays Carragher at centre back and Skrtel at right back when it is fair to say they would be alot better the other way round (Carragher has played a fair bit at right back before) and playing 4-4-2 away from home with a central midfielder on the wing.

He just looks 10 years out of date. Neutral

A definite yes for me. I really don't think Liverpool at the moment are in the position to attract the best players and I am sure this was the case in the summer with no European football etc. The signings during the summer weren't great but the club are no longer in the top 4 and don't look like getting back in there anytime soon.

Loaning out Aquilani and selling Meireles were both poor pieces of business especially with no solid back-up to come in. Meireles should start ahead of both Adam and Henderson at the moment for me.

As for the Carragher situation, it is well known he refused to play there against Middlesborough a few seasons ago under Rafa. When Skrtel came in at right-back and was picked apart just like today.

There are a lot of new players in the squad and at this moment I don't think the coaching staff and the manager know what the first choice 11 is, especially when they clearly need to get the best out of Suárez. Today the tactics and team selection have both been poor, but people should at least give Dalglish a season before writing him off.

Yes, but he shouldn't be here in the first place. Rafa shouldn't have been sacked.

Yes, however only on the basis they were unlikely to appoint anyone else who's better.

If Carragher refuses to play there, then don't play him. Laughing Forgot about Aquilani Embarassed

I understand your point about not being able to attract top players, but with a system that worked well last season, why sign players like Adam and Henderson who clearly don't fit into that. The likes of Dorrans (WBA) who is a tidy player, McCarthy (Wigan) are players that would fit into last seasons system with ease and are better players than Adam and Henderson. I get that Liverpool should be aiming at better players than that, but they would be perfect choices if it was homegrown players he wanted.

I'm also sure there are players at mid table teams in Italy, Spain, France, Germany that could make the step up to a bigger club as well.

I'm sorry I didn't know Carragher refused to play at right back a while back. This is still Dalglish's mistake, if Carragher refuses to play in a certain position then he should be dropped for the good of the team.

I wasn't talking about that, I was talking about the fact he'd get ripped apart by Bale, even more than Skrtel did.

Your opinion. Mine is that the player with the most experience there will be more useful. It would also solve the problem of Carragher making a million mistakes at the back and would make his useless passing less costly seeing as he'd be doing it from the side of the pitch and would have 2 centre backs to cover.

Carra gets beat in most 1 on 1 situations, Bale would cruise past him 9 times out of 10.

Yeah, but he would have Skrtel behind him playing in a position that is his first choice.

Skrtel at right back is very uncomfortable for him, and covering him is a player that's past his best and not playing well.

Swapped around there is Carragher just as uncomfortable at right back, but behind him a good centre back playing in his favourite position.

I'd much rather see Carragher skinned with Skrtel covering than the other way round.

Skrtel played well against Bolton at right-back, and was solid defensively against Stoke, Kenny probably thought there was no point changing it.

It shows he doesn't think about the opposition then. Who did he play against, against Bolton and Stoke? Petrov and Etherington? On narrow pitches.

Of course he thinks about the opposition, don't be fucking stupid.
And the pitch at WHL is narrower than Anfield, so I don't really see your point there.

It still baffles me how Carragher has been Liverpool's #1 CB for such a long time, imo they need two technically good CB's, Agger and Wilson or Agger and Coates should be the partnership for the long term, maybe even Agger and Kelly, but Carragher should never ever try a forward pass anymore.

Rafa's not really a great man-manager. When we brought Kenny in we needed someone like him.

Half of my point stands with Stoke. I actually forgot it was at Anfield. That's totally different, in front of the home crowd. And Spurs have better wingers than Bolton, that was the main point. Good managers tinker with their team depending on the opponents.

Dalglish obviously doesn't think about the opposition or lacks any sort of tactical knowledge.

Spurs played a 4 man midfield, should know exactly how they are gonna play. All that had to be done was stick 5 in there and outnumber them, at least make it difficult for them.

Instead it was Lucas + Adam v Parker and Modric in the middle, ultimately Modric being way better than Adam cost you.

It says something that Dalglish can't figure out how to beat a man who doesn't believe formations matter.

Initially he was signed on a 5 month contract though, if you think Rafael Benitez should never have been fired, why not let him raise the ship, save you from the relegation that was never really going to happen, and then move him upstairs and bring back Benitez. He'd sure as fuck have taken it, he returned to Merseyside when poor Roy Hodgson was in the shit, it wasn't just Kenneth Dalglish who wanted his job.

At that time I still think we needed a figure who would re-unite the club, every Liverpool fan loves Kenny, opinions on Rafa were slightly divided, the last thing we needed after weathering the storm of H+G/Roy was for more controversy.

So 5 months of Kenneth Dalglish, then offer a contract to Benitez.

He was evidently not the correct choice for the managerial task at hand. In his day, Dalglish was a fantastic manager, yet the managerial game has changed in many ways.

Does Dalglish have the ability to cope with these daunting changes? Only time will tell; however I think that he may struggle to adapt to the modern managerial game over the spell of an entire season, when the pressure is on.

I always think that Hodgson deserved a full season.

If Rafa wasn't sacked, I doubt last season would have gone as badly. So it doesn't matter really. Both are unrelated.
