Liverpool are worse then Italy without a doubt.

Italy is playing below its potential to a greater degree though. With the players Italy has, they should cruise through qualifying. Liverpool has three, arguably four truly quality players, and one of them is always injured. They have one midfielder who is quality, a couple who are suspect and the rest are just plain rubbish. So yea, Liverpool is crappier but they ought to be.

What's Italy's excuse?

They lost to the champions in a shootout. This is always how Italy does it: by grinding out razor-thin defensive battles. They live on that edge constantly. There's a fine line between winning and losing for Italy.

In the group stage they hardly put on a show. A win, draw and a loss. Only 3 goals, and conceding 4

OP really should have done a Liverpool or France rather then Italy. France are alot worse then Italy, dunno about Liverpool though.

Yea. The squeeked through the group stage in '94 and wound up almost winning the whole thing.

They weren't overpowering in 2006 either. They could have lost to Australia just as easily as they beat them and we would be talking about what a shit tournament they had in Germany. Instead, they eeek by and go on to win the tournament and we remember it as a brilliant tournament for Italy. That's Italy: they live on the edge of a fine line.

You could say the same about England to be honest. We were terrible at the World Cup, and we didn't even qualify for Euro 2008.

In all seriousness, England are a great team, we just always flop at the tournaments. Spain were very much like us before Euro 2008, and Italy have been like us for the last 2 tournaments. You can't say England are a crap team because they clearly arn't, we usually do very well in the qualifiers, been like that recently for Italy.

4 years is a long time, Italy have a very different squad than they had back then, due to most of the players in that WC squad now being fossils.
