For example say player X is better than player Y in more attributes, but the skills that player Y excels at are not matched by anyone in their position, is player X automatically better?

Player comparison
If player X is better in more attributes than player Y, is he always a better player?

Re: Player comparison
Haha. Are you getting upset?
You've worded the OP to make it seem a bit different to what I'm proposing btw. So obviously the poll will go in your favour.

Re: Player comparison
Is this like the Ronaldo fanboys still claiming that Ronaldo is better than Messi because he's more "well rounded"?

Pretty much, only in this case Gerrard is apparently better than Xavi and Iniesta.

Like I said. The way you've worded the OP will obviously put the poll in your favour.

Re: Player comparison
No, of course not.
Here is a hypothetical scenario to demonstrate - lets presume we've got two players, Smith and Jones, both are central midfielders
Smith is slightly better than Jones at passing, he has 30CM more of range
Smith is also slightly better than Jones at shooting, he can kick the ball 1% harder from a distance of 40M or more
Jones is far far better than Smith as positioning, he is always in the ideal position to intercept the ball
They are equal in all other aspects.
Who is the better player? It's Jones obviously.

Here is what he said, do you think I was unfair on him in the poll?
So, as you can see. Messi > Gerrard at more things than Gerrard > Messi at. Therefore rendering him the better player.
With regards to the last 2 lines of your post, that's the thing. If you add them all together, Gerrard > Iniesta and Xavi at more things than Xavi and Iniesta > Gerrard at.

Re: Player comparison
Depends how much better 'x' is in the skills he is better at. If it's close then it would lead you to believe that 'y' could be the better player due to his world beating couple of skills coupled with only slightly inferior other skills. But if 'x' is substantially better than 'y' on said skills then he could be better.

I agree, Jones is the better player. Jamie thinks that I view it as simple-minded like what you just said. I don't. There are a lot more factors in it.

Re: Player comparison
So to put things into FM perspective because you made the OP incredibly confusing and involved attributes which automatically makes me think FM.
It's like saying Player X has most of his attributes at 15, whilst Player Y has his passing, first touch, creativity, decisions, flair, composure etc. at 18/19, but is only mediocre good at other stuff (like 12-ish) right?
Player Y is the more talented player then, though it would still be arguable who is the better player.

It started with me saying Gerrard at his prime was better than Xavi and Iniesta. I was questioned as to why, I then went on to say it's because he had more to his overall game. I would pick Gerrard in his prime over Xavi/Iniesta.

I disagree with that but it's down to opinion.
The astoundingly idiotic part is your reasoning.

All I've been trying to say is that if two players in a similar position, of similar stature, were to be compared. The player with more overall better attributes is the better player overall individually.
Obviously, this does not apply to everyone. For example, no-one can be compared to Messi.

Re: Player comparison
There's a striker in Mexico named Enrique Esqueda, according to his coach, he's bigger than Hernandez, faster than Hernandez, taller than Hernandez, is more skillful than Hernandez and has better hair than Hernandez.
Is he a better player than Hernandez? No, because he didn't score a goal all season.

That was a mistake by Reinoso, then he lets him go. smh.
But there are a lot players more skillful than Hernandez from Mexico though. Gio and Guardado are two prime examples

Re: Player comparison
It depends on the position. Some positions require you to be good at alot more wheras other positions you can most likely get away with being excellent at only certain things.
A perfect example is Charlie Adam. Great at long range passing, wouldn't be too unfair to say one of the best in the league.
But he is shit at everything else therefore would be a liability in a top 17 PL team.
