I don't give a shit, he doesn't deserve to be in this team.

Keane, Scholes, Gerrard, Vieira just naming 4 who easily deserve it above him.

CM should be Scholes - Gerrard/Keane/Vieira.

Makelele did most of his work as a Defensive midfielder. A lot of other players did more than just defend and break up play in a Central Midfield role and should be voted before him.

Cheers Danny, you've saved us by nominating Ronaldo, would have been shocking if he wasn't mentioned and put in the poll.

Getting a role named after you doesn't mean you're good, it just means no one else does the same thing.

We could invent something called the Darron Gibson role probably.

Makelele's role was to break up play, shield opposition away and to distribute quickly. If you're not going to compare him to another player with the same roles then you should be looking at who excelled in their own role the better? I can't see any midfielder since in the Premier League started that excelled at their own specific role in their own team than he did, other than Paul Scholes. You wouldn't play Makelele as an attacking midfielder, so why compare facets of an attacking midfielder to him? Saying that "Gerrard can put in a good tackle but plays as an attacking midfielder" doesn't mean shit and you wouldn't play him as a defensive midfielder

No doubt Makelele was quality, but still doesn't change my opinion that he doesn't deserve to be in the team, infact quite a lot of players deserve it ahead of him.

If it was 4-3-3 Makelele would be DM for sure.

But because it's 4-4-2 then there needs to be a player who is balanced in attack and defence.

I've no problem with him or Scholes being in these as footballers. Just both cunts.

His success at his role which supposedly is fairly limited allowed the teams he played for to achieve large success, and not just for him, but on an individual bases he gets plenty of plaudits. It seems the difficulty of his role isn't understood or acknowledged by armchair fans like us(or most of us) and instead highly reputed by players themselves, especially those players that perform it adequately. And for Makelele well, he was the benchmark. Obviously using player quotes isn't always great as we know first hand that any former footballer can be as clueless as a 6 year old but Makelele has statistics and medals to back everything up.

Lilian Thuram has claims to being the greatest rightback in the history of the game which is especially remarkable considering it isn't even his natural position and only split his time playing there. But his effectiveness as a defensive minded rightback brought both individual and team success. Daniel Alves is not going to be a better rightback than him in a historical context just because he clocks up 20 assists a season as his role is completely different to that of someone who "supposedly" plays the same position, and neither is easier than the other. Midfield is such a varied position and the roles vary in it more than in any other position.

As far as having the "Makelele position" named after him, well that's nonsense and just something hyped up in British media and not even talked about in other countries and is something not even Claude likes talking about.

    Never said he wasn't.

He's good because he was good, not because of the position name.

    Also, in after lock. smug
